About The Position

The successful candidate will provide GIS technical assistance in support of WSP archaeology projects throughout the Southwest. They will support archaeology staff and project managers by assisting with GIS mapping, converting field data for use in reports, creating spatial data deliverables, and setting up and maintaining project-specific ESRI FieldMaps. The role involves developing tools at the intersection of data conversion, workflow enhancements, and advanced reporting. The candidate will regularly generate shareable GIS documentation, train staff, and contribute to company best practices for quality and data integrity. Demonstrated knowledge of archaeology project workflows for cultural records reviews, surveys, historic property treatment plan development, monitoring, testing, and data recovery in the Western U.S., with an emphasis on the U.S. Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and California), is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant post-education experience in discipline and demonstrated GIS experience working with cultural records reviews, surveys, monitoring, testing and data recovery.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with ESRI’s Arc GIS platform including AGOL, FieldMaps, and ArcMap.
  • Analytical skills and prior experience with research techniques, modeling data, scanning, georeferencing, and digitizing files.
  • Experience maintaining records and databases (Access and Excel) with assigned projects.
  • Experience with GIS field equipment, configuring FieldMaps, Survey 123, and mobile field data collection.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and expressing ideas effectively to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Strong ability to communicate with non-GIS and non-archaeology staff about project requirements, barriers, and needs.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, web mapping applications and tools; MS Office suite essentials (MS Team, SharePoint, MS Word, and MS Excel).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage GIS/mapping aspects of archaeology projects.
  • Ability to train, mentor and manage junior GIS and archeology staff as needed on GIS projects, desktop reviews, or aspects of field projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity and experience with Southwest Archaeology.
  • MA/MS in Anthropology with GIS Certificate or advanced degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct archaeological fieldwork and process mobile field data into map and data deliverables.
  • Ability to process non-archaeology GIS requests in support of larger projects to include other resources such as biology, paleontology, and architectural history GIS/mapping support.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting archaeological desktop (cultural records reviews) and fieldwork (survey, monitoring, testing and data recovery), including setting up ESRI FieldMap projects and supporting hardware for fieldwork and reporting.
  • Maintain strict quality control standards and share procedures for mobile field data collection and conversion for use in maps and data supporting various reports.
  • Regularly train archaeology staff on mobile field data collection procedures and quality standards.
  • Perform professional GIS work related to archaeological investigations, including digital mapping, merging topographical data with external data, identifying site characteristics and conditions, and determining the authenticity of spatial data.
  • Work with state and federal digital databases (e.g., AZSITE, NVCRIS, SEGO, and NMCRIS) and process data from state, federal, and tribal sources for cultural records reviews.
  • Contribute to the preparation of maps and data for technical reports, summarizing research findings and conclusions.
  • Assist with researching and illustrating cultural sites, features, and isolated occurrences of project areas.
  • Maintain data security related to archaeological projects in accordance with state and federal standards.
  • Assist Principal Investigators and project managers with input and analysis for permitting activities and related mitigation strategies.
  • Work within the ESRI ecosystem for map and data development, developing ESRI FieldMaps, exporting data for use in AutoCAD and Google Earth Professional, and converting data for use in ESRI ArcMap.
  • Assist in fieldwork as needed (roughly 15%) with up to 20% travel as required by archaeology support projects.
