About The Position

This position focuses on promoting loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation, and personal responsibility through example. The coach will be instrumental in building a strong culture aligned with core values for the basketball program within the competitive Merrimack Valley Conference. Responsibilities include implementing codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents, working the necessary hours to support the team, and maintaining a thorough knowledge of game rules and MIAA regulations. The role involves developing training programs, ensuring proper maintenance of athletic equipment and uniforms, traveling with the team, and demonstrating knowledge of basketball strategies and rules. The coach must adhere to district financial policies, complete injury reports promptly, maintain records and statistics, and ensure all necessary student-athlete forms are collected. They will enforce school policies, supervise student behavior, and maintain a safe environment. Attendance at various coaching meetings and annual reviews of handbooks and certifications is required. A commitment to protecting student athletes from inappropriate conduct and enforcing all rules is essential. The position requires substantial knowledge of basketball technical aspects and procedures, including MIAA rules, and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, parents, and the public. Disciplinary issues must be reported immediately to the Head Coach, Athletic Director, and Principal. Other duties may be assigned by the Athletic Director, Principal, or Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and procedures pertinent to basketball including rules of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).
  • Proven ability to work in a professional and friendly manner with various contingencies; i.e. students, teachers, parents, administrators, boosters, media, officials and the school community and public.
  • Valid Driver’s License - required
  • First Aid/CPR - required

Nice To Haves

  • Proven ability to advocate the importance of education and school community.
  • Successful previous experience as a basketball player or coach
  • Basketball coaching experience - preferred
  • MIAA Coaches Certification - preferred

Responsibilities

  • Promote by example loyalty, leadership, dedication, integrity, physical fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation and personal responsibility.
  • Focus on building a strong culture aligned with core values for the basketball program in the highly competitive Merrimack Valley Conference.
  • Implement codes of conduct for coaches, players, and parents of the HHS basketball team.
  • Work the expected hours to include arriving prior to the student athlete arrival and departure times.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of game and competition rules and educate all coaches and student-athletes.
  • Develop appropriate training programs and practice sessions.
  • Ensure the proper cleaning, storage and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms are adhered to in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
  • Travel with student-athletes on the team bus both to and from games.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of strategies and rules of basketball.
  • Adhere to all financial policies of the district in the regards to the collection, disbursement of money, expenses and receipts.
  • Work with the athletic trainer(s) and complete injury reports for any student injured within 24 hours.
  • Maintain necessary records and complete required paperwork and required team and individual statistics in a specified time and manner.
  • Work with the Athletic Department staff to ensure the proper forms including physical, attendance, parent consent and medical information is collected prior to the start of the season.
  • Enforce the policies and procedures of the Haverhill School Committee and the Haverhill High School Student Handbook.
  • Supervise appropriate behavior of students from arrival to departure, both on and off the field, including the locker room, buses, practices, and at home and away games.
  • Maintain a safe environment and facilities for all student athletes at all times.
  • Attend the annual HHS Head Coach meeting.
  • Attend the annual HHS all Coaches meeting.
  • Review the HHS Coaches Handbook annually.
  • Review and sign the Massachusetts Anti-Hazing Law Form annually.
  • Demonstrate commitment to protect student athletes from inappropriate conduct.
  • Enforce all rules in all sport-related activities and venues.
  • Report disciplinary issues immediately to the Head Coach, Athletic Director and Haverhill High School Principal.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Athletic Director, Principal and the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designee.
