About The Position

This position is for a Girls Basketball Coach at Oakland High for the Winter 2026 season. All athletic coach hires and work schedules are contingent upon student enrollment, sports sign-ups, and the sports schedule developed for the season. The coach will instruct and coach students in basketball, help arrange playing schedules, perform all associated coaching responsibilities, and attend required meetings and trainings.

Requirements

• Possess a valid CA teaching credential (preference given to current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District).
• Fundamentals of Coaching (HIGH SCHOOL) certification (does not expire).
• Middle School Coaching certification (does not expire).
• Concussion in Sports certification (expires every 3 years).
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest certification (expires every 2 years).
• Heat Illness Prevention certification (expires every 2 years).
• CPR & First Aid certification from an instructor-led class (expires every 2 years).
• Provide written evidence indicating knowledge of coaching theory and techniques in the sport (e.g., college coursework, prior coaching experience, prior participation at high school level, or in-service training).
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of basketball at the high school level.
• Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation.
• Knowledge, skill, and ability sufficient to maintain high standards of safety.
• Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship, fair play, and relationships with students.
• Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) policies related to athletics.

Responsibilities

• Instruct and coach students in the sport of basketball.
• Help arrange playing schedules.
• Perform and assist in all coaching responsibilities associated with the position.
• Attend all required meetings and trainings as specified by OAL.
• Maintain high standards of safety in all aspects of coaching at practices and contests.
• Communicate with parents/guardians and appropriate school staff regarding problems or emergencies.
• Instill teamwork, commitment, and discipline in players.
• Develop positive relations and support from parents and the community.
• Offer academic encouragement and support to students.
