About The Position

The GI Technician is responsible for providing service excellence to patients and staff, performing room maintenance, preparing and maintaining medical equipment and instruments used in the endoscopy department. This role involves decontaminating and high-level disinfecting equipment according to infection prevention policies, following equipment instructions for use, and ensuring a safe environment for patients and staff. The technician will prioritize duties, engage in continuing education, and collaborate with the GI Team and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality care. Responsibilities include assisting before, during, and after diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures, which may involve assisting physicians with procedures such as splinting abdominal walls, esophageal dilations, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, and electrocautery procedures. The technician will also assist with and participate in tissue acquisition during endoscopic procedures by operating forceps, snares, and other accessories under physician supervision.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English
  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Current Basic Life Support certification (BLS)
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Must be a Nursing Assistant in an acute care setting or have one (1) year current experience (within the past three (3) years) reprocessing flexible endoscopes.
  • Must have flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Certification through CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) (for GI Technician I)
  • Current experience in decontamination and disinfection of endoscopic equipment.
  • Successful completion of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Advanced Associates Program (SGNA) within six (6) months. (for GI Technician I)
  • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (for GI Technician II)
  • Certification from Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Advanced Associates Program (SGNA) (for GI Technician II)

Responsibilities

  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Performs room maintenance duties to include room turnover preparation and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Performs administrative and other duties as needed.
  • Prepares, cares and maintains medical equipment and instruments utilized in the endoscopy department.
  • Decontaminates/high level disinfection of equipment used in accordance with Infection Prevention policy and procedures.
  • Follows equipment IFU’s (Instruction for Use).
  • Demonstrates understanding and adheres to proper PPE attire.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for patient and staff by complying with regulatory agency requirements and standards.
  • Prioritizes duties according to patient and department needs.
  • Responsible for personal continuing education.
  • Compliance with ethical, professional and legal standards inherent to patient care and professional conduct.
  • Participates in Process Improvement activities as directed.
  • Collaborates within the GI Team and other health care professional to ensure quality and continuity of care.
  • Assists in the implementation of the established plan of care.
  • Assists before, during and after diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures. The procedures that the GI technician may perform under the supervision of the physician include but not limited to splinting patient’s abdominal wall during colonoscopy, esophageal dilations, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy, and electrocautery procedures to include argon plasma coagulation. Will assist with and participate in tissue acquisition during endoscopic procedures. This includes, but not limited to, the opening and closing of forceps, snares and other accessories under the direction and supervision of a physician.
