About The Position

The GI Tech position assists with patient care activities and related services under the supervision/delegation of the registered nurse and/or physician, including intraprocedural support. This role involves assisting physicians with specimen handling, collaborating on safety initiatives, preparing procedure rooms and equipment, performing high-level disinfection and reprocessing of equipment/scopes, and maintaining inventory. The position also includes various clerical duties and patient positioning/transporting. This role requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan. The incumbent must be able to assess patient status, interpret information, and provide necessary care according to departmental policies and procedures. Specific age-specific information is further detailed in departmental job standards.

Requirements

  • GI Technical Specialist (GTS) certification issued by SGNA by completing the SGNA Associates Program needs to be obtained within 6 months.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 1 year of experience in a nursing assistant, medical assistant or similar patient care position.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders and twist frequently during work shift.
  • Must be able to: lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
  • carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to: push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • Must wear lead aprons with the weight resting on shoulders.
  • Must have speech, hearing, & sight for communication during procedures in which incumbents are working side-by-side and must have touch and fine motor skill coordination.
  • Must be able to function in a very limited space as procedure rooms are small and work will be in close proximity to the other health care members and physician they are assisting.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radiation, blood and body fluids; therefore, protective clothing including gloves, gown, and masks with eye shields, laser glasses, foot, and hair covers just be worn as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient care activities and related services under the supervision/delegation of the registered nurse and/or physician including but not limited to intraprocedural support.
  • Assists physicians with accurate retrieval of specimens, specimen preservation, labeling and transportation of specimens to lab.
  • Assists in initiating and/or collaborating with the team for all safety initiatives such as timeout process, traceability of equipment used, and reporting of safety events.
  • Organizes and prepares procedure rooms and equipment according to each physician's specification, checking and assembling proper instruments and equipment needed.
  • Performs high level disinfection and reprocessing of equipment/scopes in a safe and effective manner based on established standards.
  • Cleans, calibrates, operates and performs preventative maintenance on equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control policies and guidelines.
  • Reports and documents equipment repairs.
  • Documents procedures, images, videos and patient charges utilizing the endoscope and ultrasound information systems.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory for unit by informing unit when supplies are needed, stocking supplies, and receiving ordered supplies.
  • Performs various clerical duties which includes answering of phones, filing, data entry, scheduling and compilation of patient records.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper techniques.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
