About The Position

The GI Technical Specialist (Acute) assists the physician and/or RN during procedures, possessing knowledge of endoscopic equipment and procedures. This role ensures endoscopic equipment is in good working order, performing all necessary elements of cleaning, high-level disinfection, and scope reprocessing according to department policies. The GI Technician is responsible for setting up and organizing endoscopic suites, preparing rooms and endoscopes for patient use, and participating in room turnover, pathology, specimen collection and logging, and documentation as directed. The specialist completes delegated tasks, undergoes required training, troubleshoots equipment, adheres to staffing and on-call schedules, and performs efficiently in emergency situations, including advanced procedures with GI providers.

Requirements

  • Must meet one of the following: Surgical Tech Certification, CNA, EMT Training, MA program, Nursing student completed 1st semester.
  • Able to complete GI Associates program within 90 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support - BLS Required within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the physician, and/or RN during procedures.
  • Possessing knowledge of endoscopic equipment and procedures performed.
  • Assuring endoscopic equipment in good working order.
  • Performing all necessary elements of cleaning, high level disinfection and scope reprocessing per department policy and procedures.
  • Setting up and organizing endoscopic suites.
  • Preparing the rooms and endoscopes for patient use.
  • Participating with room turnover, pathology, specimen collection and logging, and documentation as directed.
  • Completing tasks as delegated by RN or physician within defined role functions and documented competency, and assisting the physician and GI RN before, during and after diagnostic and therapeutic procedures with required tasks such as (biopsy, polypectomy, abdominal pressure, banding, dilation, ultrasound, specimen collection, etc.).
  • Completing organizational and department specific learning modules/training as assigned or required specific to own job role, including quality assurance and improvement activities, reprocessing, HLD and maintenance of equipment according to infection control policies and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Technically competent to trouble shoot the processor tower, and associated machines (i.e. lithotripsy, spyglass, EUS, APC, etc.), GI software program issues and automated endoscopic reprocessing machines and follows appropriate steps to get issues resolved as quickly as possible, especially in emergent situations.
  • Adhering to staffing and scheduling practices which includes requirement to take call, and live/or be able to respond to the hospital within 30 min. of notification for all on-call cases.
  • Performing efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, able to work under pressure during emergency procedures (bleeds, food bolus, foreign body), and able to perform job duties outside of the home unit in potentially uncomfortable or emergent situations such as ER, ICU, OR.
  • Possess the ability to perform advanced procedures with GI provider, acting as their assist.
  • Possess knowledge of needle advancement, placement, ability to view objects under fluoroscopy guidance, in addition to extensive training and competency in the following procedures (scheduled or on-call): ERCP (multiple different techniques for different providers), EGD with Bravo capsule placement, Endoscopic Ultrasound, Rectal Ultrasound, Endoscopic Mucosal Resection.
  • Providing and maintaining a healthy, safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with regulatory agency requirements and standards set forth by professional organizations and institutional policies.
  • Demonstrating an awareness of self-responsibility for own actions, follows appropriate reporting structures, utilizes effective communication methods and skills, and formulates positive working relationships with all health care customers.
  • Demonstrating cost effectiveness in the use of supplies and equipment.
  • Maintaining knowledge of current practice issues related to the field of gastroenterology.
  • Demonstrating self-directed learning to meet own professional development, and participates in performance improvement activities, and regularly attends staff meetings.
  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
