This Geotechnical Staff Engineer position in Oakland, CA, involves overseeing subsurface investigations, managing laboratory testing, documenting geotechnical data, performing various geotechnical analyses (slope stability, seepage, settlement, earth retention, liquefaction, shallow and deep foundations), preparing engineering reports, reviewing regulations, preparing and peer-reviewing designs and construction documents, applying QA/QC, and inspecting construction activities. Telecommuting is permitted up to 3 days per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field of study and 2 years of experience as a Civil Engineer or in a related occupation.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field of study with no experience.
  • Experience in Geotechnical Engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience in Interpreting subsurface site conditions.
  • Experience in Estimating engineering properties of geomaterials.
  • Experience in Predicting the behaviors of geomaterials and structures.
  • Experience in Providing recommendations on infrastructure design, including dams and levees.
  • Experience in Reviewing specific construction activities related to Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and Word.
  • Experience with specialized geotechnical software, including gINT, AutoCAD, GeoStudio suite, and PLAXIS.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee subsurface investigations including drilling exploration boreholes and advancing CPTs at various sites throughout Northern California.
  • Review and assign geotechnical samples for laboratory testing.
  • Assemble and document geotechnical data using software, including Excel, Word, gINT, AutoCAD.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses including slope stability, seepage, settlement, earth retention, liquefaction, and shallow and deep foundations.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports and recommendations.
  • Review regulations and standards necessary to conduct technical studies and carry out project design and permitting work.
  • Prepare and peer review designs, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Apply QA/QC requirements to own work and work of the project team.
  • Inspect construction activities to monitor progress and assess conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction standards.
