About The Position

DS Consultants Ltd. is seeking an Intermediate or Senior Geotechnical Field Technician for their Cambridge office. Requirements

  • Civil/Geotechnical Engineering Technologist Diploma or Civil Engineering Degree.
  • Three (3) plus years of related experience in geotechnical engineering field inspections.
  • Proficiency with common geotechnical and other software.
  • Familiarity with Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), Ontario Provincial Standards and Specifications (OPSS) test procedures and requirements, and local municipal standards and specifications.
  • Good understanding of geotechnical principles.
  • Strong knowledge of geotechnical concepts, materials, and asphalt.
  • Must be mobile and willing to work on a combination of field and office work, as travel will be required.
  • Strong workplace health and safety practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer usage.
  • Ability to carry out assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs as required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong report writing skills and verbal communication in English are essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and to proactively respond to time-sensitive issues.
  • An Ontario Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Engineering Technician/Technologist (C.Tech/C.E.T.), Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.), Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or eligible for Engineer –in- Training (E.I.T.) status.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical services in a field, office, and laboratory environment.
  • Perform site inspections, material testing (soil, asphalt, concrete) using a nuclear gauge, material sampling, data collection, and general geotechnical work supervision.
  • Provide technical assistance in materials-related projects, including field and laboratory testing of various materials on construction sites, in-situ density testing, and testing of concrete and asphalt materials.
  • Work on assignments for projects of low to high complexity.
  • Identify soil/rock and assist junior staff in preparing field reports.
  • Analyze information and prepare reports.
  • Ensure workplace health and safety practices are followed at all times.
