About The Position

Turner Staffing Group is recruiting a Geotechnical Engineer for a direct-hire role with a mining operation near Elko, Nevada. This growth-focused position is intended for an early- to mid-career engineer seeking to develop a career in mining geotechnical engineering. The engineer will evaluate soil, rock, groundwater, and geologic conditions to support safe mine workings and infrastructure, including pit slopes, underground excavations, tailings storage facilities, waste dumps, and haul roads. The role works alongside experienced geotechnical staff and collaborates with mine planning, geology, operations, environmental, and civil engineering teams. Mentoring and training are available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 0–5 years of geotechnical, mining, or related engineering experience; relevant internships, co-ops, or research are encouraged for recent graduates.
  • Working knowledge of rock mechanics and soil mechanics through coursework or field experience.
  • Exposure to slope stability analysis, ground support design, data interpretation, and technical reporting.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Rock Mechanics.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical and mine design software such as Rocscience (Unwedge, Dips), GeoStudio, Surpac, Vulcan, AutoCAD, or GIS platforms.
  • Experience with FLAC3D or other advanced numerical modeling; not required, as training and mentoring will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Support geotechnical investigations, including drilling programs, rock and soil sampling, laboratory testing, and field mapping.
  • Analyze rock mass behavior, slope stability, ground support requirements, and soil mechanics.
  • Help develop geotechnical models for open-pit and underground operations.
  • Run stability analyses and numerical models, including FLAC3D, under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Assist with stope sequencing, mine design optimization, and excavation stability assessments.
  • Contribute to the design and evaluation of stope dimensions and dilution/ELOS estimates, underground ground support systems, pit slopes and bench configurations, waste rock dumps, and tailings storage facilities.
  • Support Ground Control Management Plans (GCMPs), TARPs, and geotechnical risk management processes.
  • Monitor ground conditions and interpret instrumentation data from prisms, piezometers, MPBX/extensometers, and radar systems.
  • Identify geotechnical hazards such as slope failures, rockfalls, subsidence, and seismic activity, and help develop mitigation plans.
  • Perform field inspections and prepare stability assessments, risk assessments, and technical reports.
  • Provide day-to-day geotechnical support to operations and help develop practical, implementable solutions.
  • Support drill-and-blast optimization from a geotechnical perspective.
  • Participate in mine planning and scheduling meetings.
