About The Position

Cabin Resources Management Ltd. is seeking a Geospatial Data Analyst to join their company. Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-5 years’ experience working within the natural resource sector in British Columbia.
  • Domain knowledge of forestry: understanding of forest management and forest ecology at the landscape-level; ability to interpret and represent forest policy and management guidance in spatial and quantitative analysis.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, R, Arcade, ArcPy, JavaScript, HTM, including a strong ability to troubleshoot scripts, debug code, and diagnose errors in complex geospatial models.
  • Strong ability to work effectively independently and with multidisciplinary teams throughout the company.
  • Strong working knowledge of Git workflows (branching, merging, resolving conflicts, and rebasing) in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to produce descriptive statistics from tabular data sets; training and evaluation of regression models, clustering and segmentation.
  • Organizational skills related to data archiving, change tracking, structure, and other data management standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Domain knowledge of wildfire planning, prevention, and modelling: understanding of wildfire behavior and analysis, wildfire fuel types, community and landscape level wildfire planning (wildfire operations for suppression and tactical planning).
  • Experience with wildfire exposure, vulnerability, and burn probability simulators including Prometheus, Cell2Fire, BurnP3+.
  • Experience in developing, training, and validating ML/DL models to predict wildfire behavior, probability, and risk mapping by integrating climate data, historical fire perimeters, and real-time weather feeds.
  • Solutions-oriented mindset, honesty and authenticity (even when times are tough), ability to tackle difficult problems, creative thinking, problem solving and someone who really, really likes being on a cool team.
  • Current registrant or registrant in training as an FIT, RFT, RPF, PAg, AAg.

Responsibilities

  • Development, deployment and maintenance of analytical geospatial tools and models for the Forestry and Wildfire Divisions.
  • Conducting analysis in support of Forestry and Wildfire Planning projects, leveraging remote sensing data including satellite, LiDAR and drone acquired data.
  • Lead GIS analysis projects from conception to completion including defining project scopes, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Work with forestry and wildfire planners, and other divisional managers to develop geospatial solutions and workflows.
  • Preparing, writing and presenting report recommendations and resultant outputs to technical and non-technical audiences.
