Geo-Mechanical Engineer (Intern)

ViridienCalgary, AB

About The Position

Viridien is seeking an intern to work on CO2 capture, storage, and utilization technologies. This role involves precise 3D modeling, integrating seismic and well data, and geomechanical modeling of reservoirs for CO2 injection. The intern will utilize and test GEOSIM, a coupled reservoir, geomechanics, and fracturing software, with a focus on its new parallelization option on high-performance computing (HPC) machines. The work will involve testing on synthetic and real data to validate the application and compare results with other geomechanical tools. The intern will document the workflow, propose improvements, and support the operational team on key case studies.

Requirements

  • Final year of a graduate degree in relevant engineering and science programs.
  • Strong skills in mathematics, physics, and geomechanics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with R&D partners.
  • Solid understanding of the theoretical principles of geomechanics and finite element simulation.
  • Experience with industrial 3D geomechanical simulators such as CMG, Abaqus, and Visage.
  • Proficiency in programming languages, including Fortran and C++.
  • A strong research mindset and excellent teamwork skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with geophysics and petrophysics is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Test the new parallelization option of GEOSIM on HPC machines.
  • Test the software on synthetic and real data to validate its application.
  • Compare the results with other geomechanical tools available.
  • Document the main steps of the proposed workflow.
