The Genetics Counselor is responsible for providing genetic counseling to patients, parents and families. This role involves gathering family and medical history, counseling patients and families regarding genetic disorders or birth defects, discussing the benefits and limitations of genetic testing options, obtaining informed consent, documenting in patient charts, developing follow-up recommendations, and maintaining appropriate records with confidentiality. The counselor will also assist families in understanding genetic disorders, their probable course, management strategies, medical recommendations, and recurrence risks. Additionally, the role includes developing and presenting educational programs, coordinating and supporting research protocols, and performing associated administrative or clerical tasks. Patient care and counseling are provided to all patients of childbearing age.
