About The Position

Provide genetic counseling to patients seen in Mercyhealth. This position is located in Rockford, IL (Riverside) and is a full-time role working 80 hours over a 2-week period, Monday through Friday, with no weekend work required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates comprehensive patient care, including providing a description of the genetic counseling process, gathering relevant information (medical records/family history), and obtaining appropriate current medical literature.
  • Ensures the timely distribution of a summary letter to the patient and referral source.
  • Assists and conducts counseling sessions, coordinating further care and follow-up.
  • Participates in community and professional education, accommodating requests for lectures and organizing/presenting educational conferences.
  • Participates in obtaining and utilizing grant funding, ensuring maximal use of funds.
  • Promotes public awareness of the regional genetics service and functions as a regional community resource for genetic disease-related inquiries.
  • Maintains patient data for yearly statistics, including referrals, referral sources, patient demographics, indication for referral, and diagnosis.
  • Attends continuing education programs and appropriate educational seminars yearly, as funding permits.
  • Maintains current educational materials and up-to-date patient educational materials in sufficient quantities, as well as current medical resources.
  • Provides genetic counseling and medical care for position newborn screen cases and provides information to the State of IL NBS program as needed.
  • Acts as an educational resource/mentor for individuals interested in medicine and the field of medical genetics.
  • Provides genetic counseling services that follow the code of ethics guidelines established by the NSGC/ABGC.
