About The Position

Wikimedia Deutschland is seeking an experienced freelance researcher to map the product landscape of challenges and opportunities in Open Data, Open Governance, and Open Source within the evolving generative AI ecosystem, with a particular focus on the Global Majority context. The goal is to guide Wikimedia Deutschland and its collaborators in identifying effective projects to undertake or support. This research aims to better understand how to benefit Global Majority-representing cultural groups working towards free & open knowledge within the genAI ecosystem. The outcome will be a written report including landscape mapping and actor analysis in the space of open data and mission-aligned AI training. The report should conduct a concise analysis of key actors, dependencies, concepts, and ongoing processes, assessing their relevance to Wikimedia Deutschland regarding collaboration, product development, and funding opportunities. It will provide a foundation for strategic decision-making and prioritized funding opportunities for Wikimedia Deutschland leadership, and support the development of Wikimedia’s strategic stance on open dataset stewardship and reuse in the context of generative AI.

Responsibilities

• Map the product landscape of challenges and opportunities of Open Data, Open Governance, and Open Source with regard to the evolving generative AI ecosystem, especially in the Global Majority context.
• Guide and motivate WMDE and collaborators towards the most effective projects to undertake or support.
• Better understand how to benefit Global Majority-representing cultural groups working towards free & open knowledge within the genAI ecosystem.
• Conduct a concise analysis of key actors, dependencies, concepts, and ongoing processes in the space of open data and mission-aligned AI training.
• Assess results for their relevance to Wikimedia Deutschland regarding collaboration, product development, and funding opportunities within the Open Data & AI ecosystem.
• Deliver a foundation for strategic decision-making and prioritised funding opportunities for Wikimedia Deutschland leadership.
• Support Wikimedia in developing Wikimedia’s strategic stance on open dataset stewardship and reuse in the context of generative AI.
