About The Position

Cornell Health's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is seeking Generalist Counselor Therapists to join their multidisciplinary service team. These positions are primarily responsible for the mental health of Cornell University's undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Counselor Therapists will serve as a resource for mental health education and prevention strategies across campus, and may consult with faculty, staff, and parents regarding student mental health issues. Responsibilities include short-term individual counseling, urgent care and crisis intervention services, and/or access and referral services for students seeking care, depending on organizational needs. The role requires a commitment to providing timely mental health access in academic settings, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to collaborative work, sound clinical judgment, and a willingness to learn and adapt to the evolving values and approaches within the Cornell community. Flexibility in working hours to accommodate periodic delivery of services after hours or on weekends is also necessary. Requirements

  • Master of social work degree with “C” or “R” designation (LCSW or LCSW-R), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC-D), or Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology (PhD or PsyD) and a minimum of 3 years of work-related experience.
  • Licensed in New York State.
  • Strong interest in entrenching clinical services within the culture of academics and the campus community.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Professional autonomy and maturity allowing for independent delivery of services.
  • Experience with individuals presenting common clinical issues prevalent in college mental health including but not limited to suicidality, disordered eating, substance use disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, issues of young adulthood, and trauma.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, verbal, and electronic communications skills, including the ability to convey complex information in accessible terms to diverse or multicultural audiences.
  • Understanding of, and compliance with, the ethical and legal issues involved in the provision of clinical services.
  • Ability to establish, build, and maintain effective working relationships based on respect, empathy, and honesty with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to manage and carefully maintain confidential and private information; use confidential, sensitive and/or private records and information, and protect information appropriately.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in college mental health, working with undergraduate, graduate and professional students or with college-aged students.
  • Experience working with college student services staff and faculty.
  • Experience working in an integrated healthcare environment.
