About The Position

Central Maine Healthcare is seeking a General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider to join its team serving the Central Maine region. The General Surgery Advanced Practice Provider provides comprehensive surgical care in collaboration with attending surgeons and multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Responsibilities include evaluating patients, assisting in surgical procedures, managing perioperative care, performing bedside procedures, and coordinating patient care across inpatient, outpatient, and surgical settings. The APP functions within the scope of practice established by state regulations, hospital policies, and credentialing requirements.

Requirements

  • Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current state license as an Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • BLS upon hire and maintain current
  • Previous experience with electronic health record.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience as a nurse practitioner or Physician Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including medical histories and physical examinations.
  • Evaluate surgical consultations and formulate treatment plans in collaboration with supervising surgeons.
  • Manage preoperative, postoperative, and follow-up patient care.
  • Order, interpret, and communicate laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic test results.
  • Conduct daily inpatient rounds and coordinate patient management plans.
  • Assess and manage acute and chronic surgical conditions.
  • Assist surgeons in the operating room during surgical procedures.
  • Perform first-assist duties including tissue handling, suturing, retraction, hemostasis, and wound closure as credentialed.
  • Participate in robotic, laparoscopic, and open surgical procedures as appropriate.
  • Ensure proper surgical documentation and postoperative orders.
  • Perform bedside procedures within scope and privileges, which may include: Wound care and debridement, Incision and drainage, Suture and staple removal, Placement and removal of drains, Central venous catheter removal, Nasogastric tube placement, Minor surgical procedures as credentialed.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, hospitalists, specialists, nursing staff, case management, and ancillary services.
  • Facilitate discharge planning and transitions of care.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and postoperative care.
  • Coordinate outpatient follow-up and continuity of care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Complete operative notes, consultation notes, discharge summaries, and procedure documentation as required.
  • Adhere to hospital, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
