People • Customers • Trust Position Summary: The General Manager is responsible for setting the momentum for manufacturing performance by providing operational leadership for the plant management team and employees. The General Manager embodies the company’s commitment to delivering high quality products to customers, ensuring a safe work environment for our employees, implementing sound business practices in driving profitable growth, and continuing progress towards establishing a Golden Rule work culture. Dimensions: Specific dimensions for this position vary based on plant size. For example, an Extra Large plant typically has an employee population exceeding 125 employees and an operating profit in excess of $3 million, while a Small plant typically has an employee population of less than 50 employees and an operating profit less than $1 million.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree required with a concentration in engineering or business preferred.
  • Seven (7) years of experience as a general manager in the packaging industry or ten (10) years of experience as a sales or production manager in Packaging Corporation of America.
  • Established knowledge of corrugated and packaging manufacturing machinery, concepts, practices, and procedures including continual improvement processes and safety practices.
  • Solid financial and business operations analysis skills with the ability to identify opportunities for improvements.
  • Previous experience in coaching, training, teambuilding, performance development, and conflict resolution.
  • Strong leadership skills, experience leading a team, and a strong understanding of the importance of open communication and information sharing among co-workers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals throughout the company on departmental procedures, policies, practices, and requests for information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to network and build relationships with individuals of various experience and corporate levels both within and outside of the company.
  • Strong listening, evaluating, and problem-solving skills. Ability to create alternative solutions and meet deadlines.
  • Strong negotiation and persuasion skills with the ability to create new business opportunities.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle numerous details, deadlines, and requests.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook as well as experience with manufacturing systems including shop floor software.
  • Must be able to travel as necessary and possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the plant management team in the development of short- and long-term strategic planning of plant profitability and production objectives.
  • Direct the activities of the Production Manager, Sales Manager, Controller, Design Manager, Resource Manager, and Customer Service Manager to ensure that the plant production and sales requirements are met or exceeded within budgetary guidelines.
  • Review financial statements, sales and activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing cost reduction and/or improvement.
  • Oversee the appropriate implementation of health, safety, environmental, quality, and continual improvement standards as set by the corporation and by local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Evaluate overall plant efficiency and make capital project recommendations when necessary to ensure that the plant remains profitable and competitive.
  • Direct and approve all registrations for maintenance and repair of building, equipment, and manufacturing methods.
  • Build effective partnerships within and between plants to strengthen the capacity of the company as a whole.
  • Manage the company relationship within the local community.
  • Champion positive employee relations, encourage teamwork, and foster employee engagement.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and counseling to help managers proactively manage employee performance.
  • Develop strategies to attract, develop, retain, and engage a high-performance workforce.
  • Work with human resources and legal contacts to coordinate labor relations and union negotiations, as applicable.
  • Know and follow policies and procedures of the company, share information that would benefit other members of the team, and find ways to improve the delivery of service to our customers.

  • The General Manager is expected to exercise high level decision making based on a variety of information provided through various sources.
  • The General Manager is expected to exercise independent judgment, conduct research, make recommendations, and lead multiple departments with limited direction to make decisions that fit within budgeted parameters and performance objectives.
  • As a company representative the General Manager must exercise discretion realizing that his/her interactions with vendors and customers must be in accordance with PCA’s commitment to the Golden Rule.
  • Internally, the General Manager interacts with corporate and plant personnel from all functional areas.
  • The General Manager is expected to develop solid working relationships with these individuals to increase plant and department interactions and overall communication efforts.
  • The General Manager is responsible for overseeing staff to provide training and mentoring for their staff.
  • Externally, the General Manager interacts with existing and potential customers, union representatives, and the local community.
