About The Position

Toyota’s Environmental Regulation and Research Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated General Manager. The primary responsibility of this role is to lead a team responsible for engaging and shaping US federal and state environmental and energy related regulation, policy and research. Reporting to the Vice President, the person in this role will support the department's objective to work with government to reduce environmental impacts while seeking to align regulation and policy with Toyota’s technology and business strategies. This position is based at our office in Washington, D.C. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within commutable distance of this location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher or equivalent and relevant professional work experience.
  • Substantial experience with state and federal environmental regulatory processes leading and/or conducting regulatory affairs activities for a regulated or government entity, leading complex negotiations, and developing and advocating public policy positions on major environmental issues of national importance.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing strategy and tactics to secure favorable outcomes in negotiations involving complex issues and multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to develop a strong professional network both within and outside an organization and the ability to mobilize that network to secure positive outcomes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to simplify complex issues into understandable language.
  • Proven ability to engage effectively with senior business and technology executives up to and including the CEO and Board of Directors level.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and engage a highly qualified staff in multiple locations to achieve group objectives.
  • Open and willing to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineering or other technical degree.
  • Direct experience in environmental or automotive policy issues involving the U.S. EPA, Department of Transportation, the California Air Resources Board and/or other state environmental agencies.
  • Familiarity with the federal and state legislative process, along with a strong political acumen.

Responsibilities

  • Leading a team that works with federal and state regulators on product-related environmental and energy issues including greenhouse gas, fuel economy, zero-emission vehicles, fuels, and related regulations.
  • Providing critical input to Toyota’s business planning and technology development strategies, especially in the emerging electrified vehicle area.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to develop and execute strategies to ensure regulatory outcomes that support the interests of society, Toyota, and our customers.
  • Engaging in various partnerships and collaborations with academia, industry, and non-governmental organizations to understand the long-term trends that will shape the future of vehicle and fuels policy in the US.
  • Managing, coaching, and developing team members to help achieve the group’s objectives.
