About The Position

Acuity is seeking a General Manager - Corporate Compliance & Regulatory Affairs to lead the Corporate Compliance and Regulatory Affairs functions and oversee compliance efforts across the organization. This role supervises a manager and additional professionals while maintaining governance practices and ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. The GM will collaborate with departments across the enterprise to support effective compliance processes and ensure they remain current and operational. The position also requires monitoring property and casualty insurance regulations and industry trends, while building relationships with insurance departments, regulatory agencies, and industry associations to support Acuity's compliance and regulatory objectives.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business or related area
7-10+ years of progressive experience and leadership in insurance corporate compliance, governance and regulatory affairs.
Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of relevant laws and regulations in the property and casualty (P&C) industry also required.
Good understanding of corporate and P&C insurance laws and regulatory frameworks, governance and compliance expectations.
Strong judgement and ability to balance legal risk, regulatory expectations and business objectives.
High ethical standards, discretion and commitment to confidentiality.
Demonstrated management, leadership and coaching skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex legal and regulatory issues clearly to stakeholders; ability to work well with people at all levels of the organization.
Interfaces well with external stakeholders and business partners, including insurance departments, other regulatory/government agencies and industry associations.
Proactive attitude is a must; this role requires the ability to effectively handle tasks or issues new to the department or organization with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain an enterprise-wide corporate compliance plan and program appropriate for a growing multi-state P&C insurer, including policies, controls, monitoring and reporting.
Ensure distributed compliance functions across the enterprise are in place, current and operating as intended.
Cultivate a collaborative and cross-functional approach to corporate compliance, leveraging open-dialogue and relationship building to pragmatically identify, measure, and manage risk.
Provide corporate compliance and regulatory affairs research, analysis, education and support for various projects/areas within the company.
Ensure compliance with state insurance laws, NAIC Model Laws (including but not limited to Corporate Governance Annual Disclosure (CGAD), Model Audit Rule, Insurance Data Security Model Law), Own Risk Solvency Assessment (ORSA)) and other applicable federal requirements.
Oversee compliance training and awareness programs for officers, management and employees.
Establish reporting and escalation procedures, manage compliance-related investigations and document findings and resolution.
Serve as subject matter expert and escalation point for compliance-related questions from the organization, actively remaining attuned to Acuity’s strategic plan and initiatives in order to proactively identify risk and compliance impacts.
Support risk assessments, auditing and monitoring activities in accordance with compliance programs; identify and assess potential areas of compliance vulnerability.
Lead the Company’s regulatory affairs strategy, including proactive engagement with state insurance departments and other regulators.
Be (or become) familiar with key regulatory requirements and laws in Acuity’s primary states and/or lines of business. This may include working with legal and or outside counsel/advisors.
Monitor and assess emerging regulatory trends affecting the P&C insurance industry (e.g., data privacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), climate-related disclosures) and advise leadership and/or coordinate with other key areas at Acuity accordingly to ensure timely and effective compliance.
Ensure effective regulatory change management processes are in place to identify, assess, and implement new or revised regulatory requirements impacting the company and its subsidiaries.
Oversee preparation, review, and filing of various regulatory submissions, including CGAD, Form D filings, extraordinary transaction approvals, licensing, and holding company matters, in coordination with Finance, legal and other areas.
Establish and maintain relationships with state regulators, compliance professional organizations (e.g., APCIA, NAMIC, NCCI) and network of external counsel including federation of regulatory counsel (e.g., FORC) and advocacy groups (e.g., APCIA, WIA, regional associations).
Assist with agenda, meeting materials and minutes for quarterly Corporate Affairs and Compliance Committee meetings.
Coordinate and manage response to internal and state insurance department audits and market conduct exams, including coordinating with other departments and compiling necessary information to ensure timely and accurate responses.
In concert with other areas including legal, assist with regulatory affairs/corporate compliance research as needed for new states/ products/companies.
Ensure compliance and regulatory risks are appropriately identified, managed (escalated if necessary) and integrated into the organization’s enterprise risk framework.
Ensure various corporate governance and other compliance filings are prepared accurately and within established deadlines. This may include organizational changes, NAIC biographical affidavits, collection of conflict of interest forms etc.
Maintain centralized issue log, monitor complaints received, including timely resolution/response. This includes complain tracking, administration, tend analysis on complaints data and providing feedback to impacted parties and management.
Lead and develop the Corporate Compliance and Regulatory Affairs team, including succession planning and talent development.
Foster a culture of integrity, accountability and regulatory discipline across the organization.
Maintain strong working relationships with regulators, industry associations, auditors and external advisors.
With respect to management and supervision of staff: assigns and directs work, provides on-the-job training and coaching, monitors volume, quality and service to internal and external parties, evaluates performance and provides feedback, communicates wage and salary review.
Proactively pursue development opportunities and seek out continuous professional growth. This includes participation in professional compliance and/or regulatory affairs organizations as well as continuing education opportunities and requirements.
