About The Position

This position involves the cleaning and maintenance of various academic and/or Residence Life Buildings at Winona State University. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, dusting, carpet extraction, and floor finishing. The role also entails emptying and cleaning trash and recycling containers, cleaning classrooms, windows, glass partitions, doors, walls, blackboards, and drinking fountains. Restroom cleaning and restocking supplies are also key duties. Additionally, the position involves light maintenance and routine mechanical repairs, such as minor repairs to cleaning equipment and replacing ceiling tiles. Cleaning outside building entrances, snow and ice removal, and maintaining the loading dock are also part of the role. The General Maintenance Worker will also be responsible for moving furniture and equipment, performing minor maintenance on equipment and buildings, assisting with special event setups, and maintaining all equipment and tools in proper working order. This is a full-time, classified, non-exempt position covered by the AFSCME union.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment.
  • Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.
  • Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.
  • Ability to demonstrate physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions.
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
  • Ability to keep simple records.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to lawfully accept employment in the United States by the day employment begins.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning and maintenance of various academic and/or Residence Life Buildings.
  • Sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, dust mopping, carpet extraction, stripping old and applying new finish to floors.
  • Emptying and cleaning trash receptacles and recycling containers.
  • Cleaning classrooms, windows, glass partitions, doors, walls, blackboards, and drinking fountains.
  • Cleaning restrooms and providing necessary tissue and hand cleaning supplies.
  • Cleaning inside building entrances, replacing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Performing light maintenance and routine mechanical repairs or special maintenance and repair activities such as minor repair to vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, window coverings and replacing ceiling tiles.
  • Cleaning of outside entrances and maintaining necessary supplies on hand.
  • Sweeping, removing snow and ice, cleaning around trash compactors, emptying trash containers and ash urns.
  • Ensuring proper supplies and equipment are on hand to perform all duties.
  • Maintaining the loading dock.
  • Moving furniture and/or equipment within and between buildings.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintaining all equipment and tools in proper working order.
  • Performing minor maintenance work on equipment and buildings.
  • Assisting with the set-up of special events.
