About The Position

The General Maintenance Repair Tech - Electrical position is responsible for working on a team to perform a wide variety of maintenance and emergency repair tasks to University buildings (physical structure, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems), with the employee being involved in a regular program of inspection and repair using more than one skilled trade. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles. Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
  • One (1) year of experience in a skilled craft area.
  • Certificate from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building or mechanical trade area may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Valid driver’s license by the time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.
  • Electrical and/or life safety systems experience.
  • Work experience that required knowledge of the standard practices, tools, equipment and materials associated with electrical and/or a variety of skilled crafts and building trades.
  • Work experience that required knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades.
  • Ability to read and correctly interpret blueprints, electrical or plumbing schematics as evidenced by work experience.
  • Experience working in a university, college or multi-building campus environment.

Nice To Haves

  • May assist electricians on additional issues including breaker, wiring, fire alarm and controls issues.
  • May assist other trades as needed (HVAC, plumbing, carpentry etc.).
  • May assist senior staff with more complex repairs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic electrical repair including relamping, ballast changes, troubleshooting and repair of outlets, switches, and basic appliance troubleshooting.
  • Assist electricians on additional issues including breaker, wiring, fire alarm and controls issues.
  • Assist other trades as needed (HVAC, plumbing, carpentry etc.).
  • Respond to emergency calls involving loss of utilities or equipment failure.
  • Reset breakers and assist with emergency repairs.
  • Perform repairs as time and expertise permits.
  • Assist senior staff with more complex repairs.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of tools, parts, and supplies for jobs.
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Assist with other maintenance areas and in other work areas as assigned.
  • Assist with snow removal and surface treatment.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
  • Operate work issued vehicles for transporting staff and materials.
  • Work occasional planned and unplanned overtime as needed including responding to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  • Digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
