About The Position

The General Maintenance Mechanic performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and installation duties involving machinery, plumbing, physical structures, electrical wiring and fixtures across university facilities, with a primary focus on HVAC and mechanical systems. This role serves as the first point of contact for facility-related issues, particularly during off-hours, ensuring building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards. The General Maintenance Mechanic works independently and collaboratively with HVAC Mechanics to troubleshoot problems, perform repairs, and support ongoing preventive maintenance programs. This position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as need to support operational and business needs. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, apprenticeship training, and relevant experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Demonstrated knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of reading and understanding schematics.
Understanding of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
Knowledge of hand and power tools used in general maintenance.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to provide excellent customer service and educate clients on system usage and maintenance.
Ability to remain in a stationary or active position for extended periods throughout the work shit.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Responsibilities

Serves as first‑response general maintenance mechanic for building mechanical and HVAC issues, performing initial assessment of equipment condition and identifying obvious causes of failure or malfunction.
Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on non‑refrigerant HVAC and mechanical equipment (such as exhaust fans, air handlers, coils, belts, bearings, motors, pumps, evaporative coolers, air compressors, and vacuum pumps) following established procedures and standards.
Assists HVAC Mechanics with more complex HVAC system repairs and troubleshooting by performing tasks such as lockout/tagout, equipment access, part replacement, cleaning, and reassembly under direction.
Performs basic operational checks of assigned building systems and equipment to verify proper function after repairs or maintenance and escalates issues that require HVAC or other licensed trades.
Supports upkeep of specialized equipment (for example decorative fountains and stadium sky box heating and cooling equipment) by performing scheduled preventive maintenance and reporting advanced repairs needed to HVAC or other trade specialists.
Monitors assigned building systems for abnormal conditions, documents findings, and communicates recommended work to HVAC and other trades to maintain safe and reliable operation.
Responds as first‑line general maintenance mechanic for facility issues, troubleshooting and resolving routine problems with building components such as plumbing fixtures (sinks, toilets, faucets), doors, and interior finishes.
Performs basic repairs on plumbing fixtures (for example clearing minor clogs, replacing faucet aerators, adjusting flush mechanisms) and escalates issues that require licensed plumbers or major repairs.
Performs initial checks and minor corrective actions on HVAC‑related equipment (such as replacing belts and filters, resetting equipment, and addressing obvious mechanical issues) and coordinates with HVAC Mechanics for complex diagnostics, control issues, or system‑level repairs.
Assesses service requests to determine when issues can be resolved independently versus when to coordinate and assist with specialized trades (for example HVAC, plumbing, electrical), ensuring timely escalation and communication.
Performs scheduled preventive maintenance tasks on assigned building systems and equipment, including basic HVAC components, plumbing fixtures, and general facility elements, and documents work performed in maintenance systems.
Maintains accurate records of inspections, repairs, and service needs to support tracking of equipment condition, follow‑up work orders, and compliance with departmental standards.
Safely operates hand tools, power tools, ladders, and material handling equipment (such as forklifts and carts) to complete maintenance tasks and support trades work when assisting HVAC and other specialized staff.
Transports materials, supplies, and equipment between shops and work sites using university vehicles, ensuring proper loading, securing, and documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
Performs routine servicing of tools and equipment (such as lubrication, cleaning, and basic upkeep) and reports larger repair or replacement needs to supervision to maintain safe and reliable operation.
