About The Position

Performs construction renovations and alterations to areas both on and off campus. This position leads/recommends Plumbing initiatives to the R&A Shop Manager regarding installing, maintaining, modifying, repairing, and removal of Plumbing related systems, devices, and related controls. This position provides master level Plumbing expertise. Supports all other Trades aspects of R&A Shop. Responsible for maintaining buildings in a safe, orderly, and proper working condition. This position is classified as General Maintenance I (GM I) for applicants without a state issued plumbing license. Applicants holding a valid state issued plumbing license will be considered for the General Maintenance II (GM II) level.

Requirements

Applicants without a state issued plumbing license will be considered for the General Maintenance I (GM I) level.
Applicants holding a valid state issued plumbing license will be considered for the General Maintenance II (GM II) level.
Master level Plumbing expertise.
Ability to interpret schematic drawings, blueprints, OM manuals, and vendor manufacturing literature.
Ability to develop and submit detailed requisitions for materials, supplies, parts, tools, and equipment.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair plumbing related issues.
Ability to perform work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems.
Ability to repair or replace damaged plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, electronic flush valves and faucets, and drinking fountains.
Ability to perform moderate electrical work to connect, disconnect, service, and troubleshoot pumps, heaters, boilers, and related equipment.
Ability to perform skilled mechanical maintenance work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and refrigeration control systems.
Ability to perform basic electrical work by replacing/installing switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, insulators and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and equipment.
Ability to install new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery.
Ability to inspect and test electrical lighting, power circuits, and equipment.
Ability to maintain and repair existing electrical wiring, equipment.
Ability to comply with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.
Ability to perform heating, ventilation and air conditioning ( HVAC ) work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of high and low pressure refrigerant systems.
Ability to perform basic carpentry work to repair doors, window frames, floors, walls, ceilings, partitions, and office furniture.
Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and manufacturers specifications.
Demonstrates requirements of safety and exhibits good safety habits.
Understanding Safety Data Sheet ( SDS ) requirements and is familiar with location and use of SDS information.
Ability to clean and organize shop areas, tool rooms, mechanical rooms, and boiler rooms.
Ability to provide means of access through walls, floors, and other structures by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers.
Ability to restore assigned work sites to their original condition.
Ability to operate power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts, and other tools relative to building renovations.
Ability to work safely off ladders, scaffolding, and various man lift type equipment.
Ability to install flooring including wood floors, carpeting, concrete, vinyl and other flooring types.
Ability to prepare construction sites, materials, and tools.
Ability to load and unload materials, tools, and equipment.
Ability to remove debris, garbage, and dangerous materials from sites.
Ability to assemble and break down barricades, temporary structures, and scaffolding.
Ability to assist contractors as required.
Ability to mix, pour, and level concrete.
Ability to hang, repair, and replace drywall.
Ability to lay/install new tilework on floors and walls, grout new and repair existing tile.
Ability to clean up job sites during and after remodeling work.
Required overtime for athletic events, student activities, and emergency call out situations.
Ability to complete truck and shop inventories as assigned.
Ability to clean and organize storage and equipment rooms.
Ability to inspect and repair roofs/roof penetrations.
Ability to repair, clean, and maintain shop equipment, tools, and vehicles.

Responsibilities

Provides recommendations to Shop Manager and functions as a team leader of Plumbing initiatives.
Assists Manager with structural design, planning, layout, and installation of plumbing work.
Oversees shop plumbing work to ensure safety and quality in the performance of assigned tasks.
Explains work requirements, methods, and procedures; instructs fellow employees in new procedures and provides direction when problems arise.
Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed by employees while performing job duties.
Informs Shop Manager of plumbing problems that may cause projects to exceed projected time frames or cost.
Oversees the full scope and range of work involved in the installation, inspection and repair of new and existing plumbing/sewer systems at university owned properties.
Inspects completed plumbing work assignments of the R&A Shop to ensure quality work performed.
Maintains knowledge of state, federal, and local codes and requirements pertaining to plumbing/sewer. Ensures these codes are maintained by shop.
Attend project meetings and interact with contractors, vendors, and engineers as needed.
Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials.
Reviews new materials for cost saving measures.
Interprets schematic drawings, blueprints, OM manuals, and vendor manufacturing literature.

Troubleshoots and repairs plumbing related issues to ensure efficient day to day operation of the University.
Performs work in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems.
Repairs or replaces damaged plumbing fixtures such as but not limited to sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, electronic flush valves and faucets, and drinking fountains or connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by making adjustments to pumps, regulators, and associated piping, threading, bending, or fusion welding pipe either by hand or by use of power equipment, screwing, bolting or fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, soldering, lead wiping, and/or acetylene cutting and welding connections to seal joints where necessary.
Performs moderate electrical work to connect, disconnect, service, and troubleshoot pumps, heaters, boilers, and related equipment.
Performs skilled mechanical maintenance work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and refrigeration control systems by inspecting and testing elements of those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, troubleshooting problems, and making adjustments and/or performing required repairs.
Performs basic electrical work by replacing/installing switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, insulators and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and equipment, installing new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery, inspecting and testing electrical lighting, power circuits, and equipment, and maintains and repairs existing electrical wiring, equipment.
Minimizes institutional liability regarding the University’s compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.
Performs heating, ventilation and air conditioning ( HVAC ) work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of high and low pressure refrigerant systems, by inspecting and testing those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performing required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or adjustment of HVAC controls.
Preforms basic carpentry work repair doors, window frames, floors, walls, ceilings, partitions, and office furniture.

Restores assigned work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing tools, materials, and debris, drop cloths, and tarpaulins used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and coordinating the cleaning, painting, or replacing tile(s) and other structural effects through which holes have been cut.
Operates power tools, hand tools, air compressors, jackhammers, backhoes, ditch witch, man lifts, and other tools relative to building renovations.
Works safely off ladders, scaffolding, and various man lift type equipment.
Install flooring including wood floors, carpeting, concrete, vinyl and other flooring types.
Prepares construction sites, materials, and tools.
Loading and unloading of materials, tools, and equipment.
Removing debris, garbage, and dangerous materials from sites.
Assembling and breaking down barricades, temporary structures, and scaffolding.
Assisting contractors as required.
