About The Position

The General Laborer is responsible for leading night shift field inspector duties, including collecting samples, observation, and inspection of products or raw materials for laboratory analysis. This role operates with a high degree of independence under established direction, with little to no direct supervision. The General Laborer also takes on additional responsibility as a Team Lead in the absence of the Supervisor/Manager, providing technical advice, training junior technicians, and ensuring the team has the necessary resources to perform their jobs safely. Responsibilities include maintaining a clean work area, performing routine equipment maintenance, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and company policies.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or High School (GED) and equivalent years of experience required.
  • Experience working in an Industrial or Laboratory or Field Services setting with experience following strict safety standards is an asset.
  • A valid and current Driver’s license may be required if the role requires driving a company vehicle.
  • May be required to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card).
  • May be required to obtain a 24-hour surface Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) certificate.
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, and phones.
  • May use sample prep equipment that may include Jaw Crusher, Bowl & Disc Pulverizing Mills, Pressure Filters, Riffle Splitters, Compressed Air, Hammer Mill Crushers, Ovens, Balances, and basic sampling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Collects samples of product or raw materials from containers, vessels, barges, trucks, and/or rail.
  • Gathers samples at specified locations, date states of processing, and time intervals.
  • Labels sample containers and all related paperwork, documenting location, date, and time of collection.
  • Delivers samples to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Prepares samples, performs reduction and division into appropriate sizes.
  • Performs sample screening and/or other related physical tests.
  • Ensures all equipment and containers are organized and cleaned before and after use.
  • Ensures all personal protective equipment (PPE) relevant for tasks is worn at all times.
  • Ensures compliance with all required local and federal safety processes and procedures.
  • Provides technical advice and support to Field Technicians.
  • May train Junior Technicians as required.
  • Serves as a Team Leader when Supervisor and/or Manager are not present.
  • Trains, motivates, and monitors staff during the shift.
  • Assists staff to carry out and complete tasks according to established work procedures.
  • Works in partnership with other Technicians to solve client problems to ensure quality and customer satisfaction standards are met.
  • Assists Supervisor and/or Manager, ensuring employees have sufficient information, resources, and materials to do their job safely.
  • May have Preparation or Laboratory responsibilities, as required by business needs.
  • Responsible for area housekeeping and cleanliness on a daily basis.
  • Accountable for routine and non-routine equipment maintenance.
  • Responsible for ensuring all safety equipment is worn and safety procedures are followed.
  • Adheres to internal standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
