About The Position

A General Laborer completes a variety of manual labor assignments given by the Road Department supervisor. Emphasis is on manual labor, including asphalt laying/repairing and heavy equipment operation. The position requires occasional night and weekend work during emergency operations.

Requirements

  • Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines.
  • Equivalent to four years high school or GED, with particular emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 0 to 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read a limited number of words and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to write and speak simple sentences as a means for basic communication.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out simple multi-step instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with limited variables.
  • Must have CDL permit within 6 months of starting date.
  • Regular use of complex machines and equipment (desktop/laptop computer and software, road and production machines and equipment, driver's license/cdl, etc.).
  • Employee is continuously required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear.
  • Employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, taste or smell.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; and depth perception.

Responsibilities

  • Working on asphalt crew.
  • Physical labor, lifting, bending (raking and shovel work).
  • Work nights and weekends during emergency operations.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
