About The Position

The General Labor Worker is responsible for providing essential labor support to the Physical Plant Department by assisting skilled trades personnel with maintenance, construction, grounds, renovation, moving, and campus improvement projects. This position performs a variety of manual labor tasks that contribute to the safe, efficient, and professional operation of AIDB's educational, residential, administrative, and support facilities. The General Labor Worker supports carpenters, maintenance mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, painters, grounds personnel, and other maintenance staff while helping maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of AIDB campuses. This position requires flexibility, teamwork, physical stamina, and the ability to perform a wide variety of duties in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; OR a minimum of three (3) years of experience in landscaping, construction, building maintenance, or a closely related field.
  • Valid Driver License with the ability to qualify for coverage under the AIDB vehicle insurance program.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds maintenance practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintain strong work ethic, dependable attendance, and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and campus personnel.
  • Ability to safely operate grounds maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Safely operate lawn mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, pressure washers, shovels, picks, rakes, brooms, wheelbarrows, and other hand/powered tools.
  • Employees are expected to develop effective communication skills with individuals served by obtaining a minimum SURVIVAL level of sign language proficiency according to the AIDB evaluation system within thirty-six (36) months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial facilities maintenance.
  • Experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance and operating commercial grounds equipment.
  • Experience supporting skilled construction trades.
  • Forklift or equipment operation experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist carpenters, maintenance mechanics, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, painters, and other skilled trades personnel with assigned maintenance and construction projects.
  • Prepare job sites by moving equipment, assembling materials, cleaning work areas, and providing general labor support.
  • Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, equipment, furniture, and construction materials.
  • Assist with minor building repairs and maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Move office furniture, classroom furniture, appliances, equipment, and supplies throughout campus; assist departments with office relocations and facility reconfigurations.
  • Set up and remove tables, chairs, stages, tents, podiums, audiovisual equipment, and materials for meetings, conferences, graduations, athletic events, and special campus functions.
  • Perform pressure washing of sidewalks, buildings, entrances, and parking areas; clean gutters, downspouts, roofs, and drains.
  • Deep clean flooring (tile, concrete, hard surfaces) using specialized cleaning equipment; remove debris, trash, construction waste, and recyclable materials.
  • Assist with mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, weed control, leaf removal, and planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and seasonal materials.
  • Spread mulch, gravel, soil, fertilizer; assist with irrigation repairs, grounds beautification, and removing fallen limbs/storm debris.
  • Perform hand demolition of walls, flooring, cabinetry, ceilings, fixtures, and building materials during renovation projects.
  • Remove construction debris, prepare work areas for rebuilding, dig trenches/holes/foundations using hand tools, and assist with concrete preparation.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of assigned tools and equipment, reporting malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
  • Interact professionally with students, employees, visitors, and contractors; respond promptly and courteously to work requests while maintaining a positive service-oriented attitude.
  • Assist during campus emergencies, severe weather events, and disaster recovery; participate in preventive maintenance, safety meetings, and departmental training.
