Now, we’re looking for a forward-thinking General Counsel to join our executive team and lead with clarity, precision, and purpose. About the Role Reporting directly to the CEO , the General Counsel will serve as a trusted legal advisor and executive leader, providing oversight across Legal, Compliance, Vendor Management, Fraud, and Information Security . You’ll play a key role in steering the company through complex transactions, maintaining regulatory compliance, and safeguarding our reputation. This is a high-impact opportunity for a collaborative, business-minded legal leader to influence strategy, shape policy, and guide ACA’s growth from the inside out.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active member of the South Carolina Bar (or ability to waive in)
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in both law firm and corporate in-house legal environment
  • Strong working knowledge of financial services law—auto finance experience is a plus
  • Expertise and experience in one or more legal domains, such as litigation, bankruptcy, privacy, contracts, employment law, etc.
  • Excellent contract negotiation and drafting skills
  • Experience advising executive leadership and navigating complex transactions
  • Proven ability to manage outside counsel
  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a fast-paced, high-growth environment

Responsibilities

  • Serve as chief legal advisor to the executive leadership team
  • Lead and oversee a large, high-performing team of approximately 50 FTEs.
  • Lead several teams including Legal, Compliance, Vendor Management, Fraud, and Information Security
  • Provide strategic direction, mentorship, and operational leadership across all functions.
  • Oversee corporate governance, litigation strategy, and regulatory risk
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts (consulting, vendor, confidentiality, service agreements, etc.)
  • Advise on labor and employment law matters, including handbooks, policies, and training
  • Provide legal counsel on federal and state regulatory issues (particularly in financial services)
  • Liaise and negotiate rates with outside counsel
  • Ensure internal policies and procedures align with legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Build and mentor a high-performing team
