About The Position

Reporting to the Vice-President of Policy, Public and Legal Affairs (PPLA), the General Counsel and Director, Legal Affairs serves as the organization’s most senior legal officer and principal legal adviser to the Board of Directors and senior management, providing authoritative legal advice and strategic guidance on all matters affecting the organization. The position is accountable for safeguarding the organization’s legal interests by ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, regulations and policies, and by promoting sound corporate governance and effective legal risk management. In addition, the incumbent leads and directs the Legal Services function, ensuring the provision of high-quality, timely and integrated legal services in support of organizational priorities. The role includes managing and developing a team of legal professionals, overseeing the allocation of legal resources, and ensuring consistent, strategic alignment between legal advice and business objectives.

Requirements

  • A University law degree (J.D., LL.B, LL.L).
  • Member in good standing in the Law Society of one of the provinces or territories of Canada.
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of experience in civil or common law, whether in the public or private sector, preferably in a corporate setting.
  • Experience interpreting and applying legislation, providing legal advice, or handling litigation.
  • Experience providing strategic legal advice to senior management.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring counsel or other professionals, including assigning work, providing feedback, and supporting professional development.
  • Experience in real estate law governing the acquisition, leasing, use and disposition of real property or in construction law, procurement and contract.
  • Broad knowledge of Canadian legal principles procedures and frameworks.
  • Broad knowledge of civil law related to property disputes and legal claims as well as employment law.
  • Knowledge of section 4 of the Department of Justice Act.
  • Knowledge of the rules, procedures, and practices of the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, provincial superior courts, the Supreme Court of Canada and administrative tribunals.
  • Problem-solving in a fast-paced, complex and high-demanding environment.
  • Analyzing and assessing complex and sensitive legal, operational and financial risks.
  • Negotiating and communicating effectively and efficiently with various internal and external partners.
