About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, ensuring they are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, overhead reaching, and having adequate sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height such as lights, curtain tips, vents, and ledges.
Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans, using a germicidal solution.
Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls, and spot clean windows using the proper solution.
Clean bathrooms by wiping down sinks, toilet seats, and the outside of toilet bowls. Clean the inside of the toilet bowl with a Johnnie Mop and germicidal solution, paying attention to the rim.
Check and refill soap and paper dispensers daily.
Empty trash cans, replacing liners and wiping down cans if liquid is present.
Dust mop or vacuum floors, working from the back of the room towards the door, ensuring all areas under furniture are cleaned.
Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash and cigarette butts.
Spot clean spills on sidewalks, remove gum with a scraper, wipe benches and vending machines, and wipe lower window ledges.
Perform high dusting for dust and cobwebs outside and clean public area glass as necessary.
Police parking lots for trash.
Dust mop and spot mop main hallways, clean glass, clean planters inside and out, and check for cobwebs and dirt in corners and edges.
Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, placing chairs back under tables.
Spot clean spills in the food court, empty and clean trash cans, and remove dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
Mentally review cleaning steps and visually check furniture placement after completing a room, making corrections as needed.
Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, as well as high dusting.
Interact with customers in a friendly and cheerful manner, answering questions courteously or referring them to someone who can assist.
Report anything broken or out of order to the supervisor.
Work quietly and try to reduce or eliminate noise.
Stay in the assigned work area unless requested to go elsewhere by a supervisor.
Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance while on the job.
Report to the supervisor if the work assignment is not completed by the end of the shift.
Perform other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor, which may include floor care (stripping and waxing, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrubbing and buffing of floors).
