About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities to keep them in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
  • Adequate sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height such as lights, curtain tips, vents, and ledges.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans, using a germicidal solution.
  • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls, and spot clean windows with the proper solution.
  • Clean bathrooms by wiping down sinks, toilets, and surrounding areas with a germicidal solution, and cleaning the inside of the toilet bowl with a Johnnie Mop.
  • Check and refill soap and paper dispensers daily.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and wiping down cans if liquid is present.
  • Dust or vacuum floors using a treated dust mophead or vacuum cleaner, ensuring all areas under furniture and in restrooms are cleaned.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash and cigarette butts, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
  • Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and police outside eating areas.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, ensuring all areas under furniture and behind doors are mopped.
  • Conduct self-inspections after completing cleaning tasks, reviewing steps, and visually checking furniture placement for corrections.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
  • Engage in customer relations and service by being friendly, courteous, helpful, and maintaining a neat personal appearance.
  • Report anything broken or out of order to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and stay within the assigned work area unless directed otherwise.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping and waxing, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrubbing and buffing of floors).
