About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities, ensuring they are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role also involves performing other tasks related to the area of assignment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling with both hands and arms (5-35 lbs force), climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, overhead reaching, and having adequate sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • High Dusting surfaces above shoulder height, including lights, curtain tips, vents, and ledges.
  • Sanitizing and spot cleaning surfaces below shoulder height, such as ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Removing fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls.
  • Spot cleaning windows.
  • Cleaning bathrooms, including sinks, toilets (using a Johnnie Mop and germicidal solution), and checking/refilling soap and paper dispensers.
  • Emptying trash cans, replacing liners, and wiping down cans if liquid is present.
  • Dusting or vacuuming floors, including under furniture and in restrooms, using an “S” stroke for dust mopping.
  • Grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks, flower beds, and curb lines for trash, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, wiping lower window ledges, and policing the parking lot.
  • Cleaning public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and high dusting window areas.
  • Cleaning, removing trash, and sanitizing tables in the food court, spot cleaning spills, and cleaning trash cans.
  • Removing dirty trays to the washroom, cleaning them using a tray power washer, and stacking clean trays.
  • Policing outside eating areas.
  • Sanitizing floors using germicidal solution, mopping under furniture and behind doors.
  • Mentally reviewing cleaning steps and visually checking furniture placement after completing a room.
  • Performing daily tasks such as hall, lobby, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, and high dusting.
  • Customer Relations and Service: Knocking lightly before entering occupied rooms, being friendly and cheerful, answering questions courteously or referring to someone who can, reporting broken or out-of-order items, working quietly, staying in the assigned work area, maintaining a clean and neat personal appearance, reporting incomplete work assignments to the supervisor, and always being courteous.
  • Performing other duties as assigned or directed by supervisor and/or Account Manager, which may include floor care (stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrubbing and buffing of floors).
