About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the facility. This includes cleaning floors, gathering trash, servicing restrooms, cleaning fixtures and windows, dusting, preparing cleaning solutions, and potentially shampooing carpets or polishing floors. The role also involves cleaning laboratory equipment, following safety procedures for chemicals and equipment, monitoring building security, moving supplies, and reporting maintenance needs. Additionally, the cleaner may be responsible for snow removal, requisitioning supplies, and setting up for events. Job assignments can vary, and the position requires flexibility with hours, including weekends and holidays. All positions are considered temporary and contingent on performance and ability to meet requirements.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work flexible hours weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • Ability to occasionally sit.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and/or vacuuming.
  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
  • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets.
  • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
  • Clean laboratory equipment, such as glassware and metal instruments, using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  • Monitor building security and safety by performing such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify managers concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas, by spreading snow melting chemicals.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
