About The Position

Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included. The salary range consists of six (6) salary steps, with approximately 5% between each step. Newly hired employees are appointed at Step A of the assigned salary range. Employees are eligible for a merit-based salary increase from Step A to Step B after six months of satisfactory service. Thereafter, employees may be eligible for annual merit-based step increases, beginning one year from the Step B effective date, until they reach the top step of the salary range. Shasta County's Election Administration and Voter Registration Department is responsible for registering voters, providing services to candidates, and conducting general and special elections. In addition, the County Clerk serves the public as licenser of marriage licenses, filer of fictitious business name statements, and is an authorized passport acceptance agent in Shasta County. Under close supervision, may perform unskilled or semi-skilled clerical work; may assist in studies and prepare written reports; and perform related work as required. This position will require candidates to work 1 – 2 weeks prior to the election on November 3, 2026, for a few days each week, with no guaranteed hours. Then on the day of the election, for a few hours, possibly including evenings and Saturdays. This position will also require frequent lifting of and transporting that will weigh up to 50 pounds.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience sufficient to directly demonstrate possession and application of the following:
  • Knowledge of: Basic principles and concepts of the academic field or trade related to the department to which the employee is assigned.
  • Ability to: Reason logically, draw sound conclusions and make recommendations.
  • Learn to assist in performing assigned technical functions.
  • May need to gather and analyze data.
  • Understand oral and written instructions.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • May need to compose clear and concise reports.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Some experience performing business office tasks, including customer service, data entry, database management, document preparation and analysis, and creating and utilizing documents and spreadsheets in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Receives instructions from staff members and applies knowledge to work situations; learns departmental policies, procedures and methods of operation; assists in the collection and analysis of data, prepares charts and reports; participates in case work and studies and prepares reports under close supervision; drives a vehicle; performs incidental manual labor.
  • Responsible for sterilization, cleaning, and stocking of laboratory supplies for use, as necessary, using a steam sterilizer and glassware washer; sterilization and disposal of laboratory waste on a daily basis; monitoring of temperatures of the laboratory environment and equipment within that environment on a twice-daily basis; disinfecting counter surfaces twice daily; cleaning of laboratory equipment, as required; cleaning and repacking of laboratory shipping supplies; labeling and organization of supplies; performing basic quality control procedures on various laboratory equipment; receiving and logging in human samples from various sources; and using the laboratory computer system for the entry of such samples.
  • Documents the performance of responsibilities using laboratory protocols; identifies and notifies the supervisor or other laboratory staff of situations that have been measured and are outside of the laboratories acceptable range of operation; documents the nature of these deviations; assists, when appropriate, to correct these problems.
  • Assists other laboratory staff, as needed and appropriate, for a variety of support functions.
  • Provides temporary traffic control for work zones within County right-of-way; performs flagging duties; drives pilot vehicle; receives and communicates specific instructions, clearly, firmly, and courteously; is able to move and maneuver quickly; is able to control signaling devices, such as flags and paddles, to provide clear and positive guidance to motorists; understands and applies safe traffic control practices, sometimes in stressful or emergency situations; and recognizes dangerous traffic situations and warns workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.
