About The Position

The Monroe County Advocate & Democrat is seeking a dynamic, career-oriented General Assignment Reporter/Staff Writer for its News Team. The role provides daily news coverage of Monroe County and surrounding areas, including local businesses and changing economic developments. The reporter may cover local politics and other beats as needed, and is expected to pursue both large-scale stories with visual and digital components and personal stories that connect with readers.

This is a full-time, regular position scheduled for 37.5 hours per week. Weeknight and weekend assignments are part of the job. The ideal candidate is a flexible, self-starting multitasker who is attentive to detail, diplomatic, and able to work under daily deadline pressure. They are a strong writer with excellent interviewing and organizational skills, tenacity, and genuine curiosity about community news. The candidate must be receptive to editors’ instructions and editing suggestions.

Requirements

• Strong writing ability and exceptional interviewing and organizational skills.
• Ability to work under day-to-day deadline pressure while multitasking and remaining attentive to details.
• Diplomacy, self-direction, tenacity, and genuine curiosity about community news.
• Ability to take effective notes and draft organized news articles from them.
• Ability to initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with community sources.
• Own transportation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Word.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

• Background or strong interest in covering local politics.
• Experience writing enterprise and long-form content and telling personal stories.
• Experience covering news on social media platforms.
• Some photography, video, and/or design experience.
• Familiarity with AP style.
• Photography, social media, and content management system experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily news coverage of Monroe County and surrounding areas, including local businesses and economic developments.
• Cover local politics and contribute to other beats as needed.
• Report and write large-scale stories with visual and digital components, as well as personal stories.
• Take effective notes and develop organized news articles from those notes.
• Initiate and maintain effective, professional relationships with community sources.
• Perform job duties and conduct oneself in accordance with the company’s core values.
• Accept instruction and editing suggestions from editors.
• Work weeknight and weekend assignments as part of the job.
