About The Position

Xcel Energy is seeking one or more Journeyman Gas Technicians to join their gas construction, maintenance, and operations crew in La Crosse, WI. This role involves installing, maintaining, and repairing gas mains and services, operating excavation equipment, performing plastic pipe fusion, working with regulators and meters, responding to emergencies, and conducting various maintenance and operational tasks. Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Commitment to working safely and compliance with all company safety rules.
  • Ability to lift and maneuver up to 50 pounds.
  • Reside within a 20-mile radius of the assigned service center within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Meet driver qualification requirements as specified in FMCSR parts 382 and 391.
  • Obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A.
  • Pass the Gas Respirator Qualifications test.
  • Three or more years of Gas Construction and/or Gas Service experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified in plastic fusion per Xcel Energy standards.
  • Experience in gas regulation and knowledge of gas appliances.
  • Experience operating mechanical trenchers/excavating equipment.
  • Experience operating electronic locating and testing equipment.
  • Additional education, such as a technical vocational or Associate’s degree, in gas utility construction.
  • Gas pipeline welding experience.

Responsibilities

  • Install gas services and mains using mechanical trenching/excavating equipment and related tools.
  • Perform plastic pipe fusion, work with service regulators, odorization, meter and regulation, and tapping.
  • Conduct operational surveys and customer priority work.
  • Respond to gas leaks (inside and outside) and perform investigations/emergencies.
  • Perform gas leak repair, cathodic protection, locating, meter reading, and valve maintenance.
  • Handle material handling.
  • Perform district regulator maintenance.
  • Conduct instrument calibration.
  • Perform meter and large regulator sizing/maintenance/installation.
  • Participate in after-hour emergency callouts in all weather conditions.
