About The Position

The current vacancy may be filled at either the Gas Planning Engineer I or Gas Planning Engineer II level. The Gas Planning Engineer I, under general direction, learns to perform the full scope of duties of a Gas Planning Engineer II through an on-the-job training program. Duties include performing professional and specialized engineering work related to gas infrastructure planning, operations, and functioning of the City’s natural gas systems. The primary responsibility is to ensure short-term and long-term operational integrity by ensuring sufficient capability within the natural gas distribution system to meet forecasted customer requirements. The incumbent learns gas system modeling for planning using GasWorks software to perform system network analysis and uses this analysis to develop master plans, implement design improvements, and plans to meet immediate or near-term needs, as well as develop the City’s Gas Master Plan for long-term requirements. This class assists in setting gas system improvement priorities, prepares cost estimates, provides budgetary input, and develops material specifications. The Gas Planning Engineer I classification differs from the Gas Planning Engineer II by the latter having significant gas planning and system modeling/design experience and a desirable registration in the state of Arizona as a Professional Engineer, and performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments with minimal direct supervision. Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Gas Planning Engineer II upon meeting specific criteria. This class is supervised by the Energy Resources Program Manager. This class is FLSA exempt-professional. The Gas Planning Engineer II performs professional and specialized engineering work related to the planning, operations, and functioning of the City’s natural gas systems. The primary responsibility is to ensure short-term and long-term operational integrity by ensuring sufficient capability within the natural gas distribution system to meet forecasted customer requirements in the short and long terms. The work involves both short-term and long-term planning using GasWorks software to perform hydraulic system analysis. This analysis is used to implement designs and plans to meet immediate or near-term needs, as well as develop the City’s Gas Master Plan for long-term requirements. This class prepares cost estimates, cost projections, provides budgetary assistance, and develops material specifications. This class is supervised by the Energy Resources Program Manager. The Gas Planning Engineer II classification differs from the Senior Gas Engineer class by the latter having registration in the state of Arizona as a Professional Engineer and performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments with minimal direct supervision. Employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting specific criteria-based promotion requirements. Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Gas Engineer upon meeting specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and professional registration. This class is FLSA exempt-professional.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Gas Engineering or related field.
Four or more years of gas engineering (or related work with a natural gas utility) experience, which includes at least two years of system planning experience for a natural gas utility; OR two years experience as a Gas Planning Engineer I and certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) (for Gas Planning Engineer II).

Nice To Haves

Experience in gas engineering or related work with a natural gas utility, which may include interning, is preferred (for Gas Planning Engineer I).
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred (for Gas Planning Engineer II).

Responsibilities

Performing professional and specialized engineering work related to gas infrastructure planning, operations, and functioning of the City’s natural gas systems.

Performing specialized and difficult engineering and technical work related to the planning, design, and operation of the City’s natural gas system (for Gas Planning Engineer II).
Preparing cost estimates and cost projections (for Gas Planning Engineer II).
Providing budgetary assistance related to planning, operations, and the function of short- and long-term design (for Gas Planning Engineer II).
