About The Position

This position will perform gas maintenance and construction work. Our crews play a critical role in providing consistent, reliable service to homes and businesses within our territory.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Must be a Journey Level Gas Mechanic
  • Must report to work fit for duty and free from the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.
  • This position requires a gas pipeline and valid CDL qualification
  • This position has emergency response requirements
  • Obtain and maintain valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to safely operate heavy equipment, hand and power tools, and other machinery
  • Knowledge of confined spaces, trenching and shoring standards
  • Read and comprehend company operating standards, right to know information, safety rules, and equipment and technical manuals
  • Must possess good reading and math comprehension skill
  • Certified in CPR and first aid
  • Good mechanical ability
  • Work harmoniously with other employees
  • Know and practice good public relations
  • Wear and use all safety equipment

Nice To Haves

  • This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and FMCSA (Part 382) and PHMSA (Part 199) regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a role model to the crew/team in attitude, promotion of harmony, safety, productivity, communications, work ethics, emergency response, and business decision making.
  • Coach employees on their performance in these aspects of their job.
  • Perform the duties of journeyman in the respective classification, when collective bargaining agreement language applies.
  • Supervise personnel in the safe construction of distribution and transmission systems.
  • Perform tailgate sessions, (assess/discuss hazards of the job and personal protection equipment required, etc.).
  • Ensure all crew members sign (if required) job-briefing form.
  • Lead by example – wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses, earplugs, hard hats, etc.).
  • Model behavior to improve safety performance (e.g. lead and participate in stretching, lead safety meetings/safety talks, etc).
  • Know safety rules/practices, regulations, and operating procedures, and see that they are followed.
  • Enforce safety by observing employees performing the work.
  • Point out and correct at-risk behavior.
  • Advise supervisor when employee continually fails to follow safety rules, work in a safe manner, or use proper tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and equipment.
  • Promote teamwork to improve safety and productivity.
  • Responsible for the productivity of employees under their supervision.
  • Manage your employees, as your own business.
  • Be personally responsible and accountable for the productivity and quality of workmanship.
  • Manage costs of tools and safety equipment (loss, misuse, breakage, proper care, etc.).
  • Supervise and discuss performance/productivity issues (positive and negative) with employees.
  • Personally take action to correct and improve.
  • Inform supervisor when employee continually fails to meet productivity or performance measures.
  • Plan work to eliminate barriers, improve productivity, and maximize resources assigned.
  • Continually strive to reduce costs.
  • Train, develop, and evaluate apprentices.
  • Seek feedback on personal performance through a one-on-one coaching session with management.
  • Coach and mentor employees to improve technical skills, safety practices, collaboration, planning, and safety of their work practices.
  • Provide constructive feedback.
  • Discuss performance issues with employees.
  • Reinforce desired individual behavior.
  • Develop technical ability (their own and employees under their supervision) i.e., continuous line training, standards, etc.
  • Make good business decisions.
  • Manage resources assigned to you - people, equipment and dollars.
  • Monitor cellular phone usage.
  • Oversee equipment operation, and maintenance vital for the job.
  • Assure vehicles are fully used on the project and shared across projects.
  • Oversee and/or complete paperwork timely and accurately to include but not limited to; mapping, timekeeping, safety reports, material issues, and returns for each individual job.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the appropriate paperwork and complete as required (STORMS orders, tailgate forms, vehicle inspections, crew timesheets, and etc.).
  • Act as Company liaison with customers, contractors, and other pertinent individuals.
  • Manage customer interactions to promote good relations.
  • Treat employees, peers, customers, and vendors in a transparent, ethical, and professional manner.
  • Communicate effectively with management and coworkers alike.
  • Inform managers when problems continue after you have addressed and tried to resolve the issue.
  • Coordinate work with other departments and work as a team.
  • Manage assets in their charge (e.g. periodic inspections, daily pre-trip inspections, 30-day inspection forms, etc.).
  • Demonstrates proper knowledge of construction standards and applications.
  • Knowledge of union contract.
