About The Position

The purpose of the class is to operate light to heavy mobile equipment and perform skilled work in installation, support and maintenance of gas distribution systems. The class is responsible for installation and maintenance of gas distribution facilities, meter repair, assisting with disconnecting and connecting service, safety inspections, and maintaining logs and records. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision. Works outside customer residences and businesses. The class works according to some procedures, but decides how and when to do things under general supervision.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • This position is an entry-level position in the Gas Department and the employee will receive on-the-job training experience performing general physical labor and experience with light to heavy equipment operation, tools or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills, and abilities.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A CDL permit within 6 months of employment .
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within one year of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain required all Operator qualifications certifications within 120 days of employment and maintain certifications according to department guidelines.
  • Must obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) 100, 200, 700, and 800 certificated within 120 days of employment and maintain certifications according to department guidelines.
  • Must be able to obtain Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain city required forklift certification and maintain throughout employment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in natural gas is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Operates specialized light and heavy mobile equipment to support department operations such as installation and removal of gas mains and services, concrete laying, and other specialized operations.
  • Operates specialized equipment in support of natural gas operations such as low and high pressure tapping equipment, mechanical and manual pipe threading equipment, pipe moleing equipment, gas leak detection equipment, pipe locating equipment, and other specialized equipment common to the trade.
  • Operates hand and power tools and equipment to support operations such as weed cutting, debris, removal, digging or filling, and other related tasks.
  • Assist Foreman in welding duties and performance of taps on live mains and services.
  • Install gas meters and regulators.
  • Inspects gas lines, meters and other components for safety, makes repairs and reports major malfunctions.
  • Installs and maintains gas metering and regulating equipment and components at gate stations or other locations.
  • Performs maintenance of SCADA system
  • May install or assist with installing automated meter reading devices.
  • Inspects equipment and performs minor maintenance; reports malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Assists with traffic control and provides information to public if required
  • Performs minor administrative tasks such as completing job-related logs and forms, answering phones, or providing information.
  • Performs related duties as required.
