About The Position

This is a multi-level position within the Gas Construction series, with incumbents hired at the highest skill level met based on education, experience, and licensing. The role involves the general installation, repair, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system. Responsibilities range from operating tools for excavation and performing labor related to system installation, to inspecting and repairing existing infrastructure, recording activities, and filing paperwork. Higher levels involve more semi-skilled and skilled work, including installing, locating, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing pipelines, fittings, and valves; plumbing and pipefitting gas lines; ordering supplies and equipment; cleaning and exercising valves; and recording utility locations in a GIS system. The Senior level also includes maintaining system documentation, inspecting the work of lower levels and/or contractors, responding to customer complaints, and potentially providing work direction to lower-level staff.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's license (for Gas Construction Worker I).
  • Must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License typically within the first 6 months of employment (for Gas Construction Worker I).
  • Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (for Gas Construction Worker II and Senior).
  • Position requires various Natural Gas Operator Qualifications deemed pertinent to position to be acquired upon hiring.
  • One (1) year of experience in natural gas distribution system maintenance and construction (for Gas Construction Worker II).
  • Two (2) years of experience in natural gas distribution system maintenance and construction (for Gas Senior Construction Worker).
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of applicable power and hand tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of basic inspection principles.
  • Knowledge of safe work methods.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping principles.
  • Skill in recognizing unusual, inefficient, or dangerous operating conditions.
  • Skill in maintaining records.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment and natural gas lines/facilities as assigned.
  • Knowledge of natural gas distribution methods and principles.
  • Knowledge of GIS equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in installing and performing routine maintenance on natural gas distribution systems.
  • Skill in performing routine inspections.
  • Skill in reading and recording GIS information.
  • Skill in using a computer and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the general installation, repair, and maintenance of the natural gas distribution system.
  • Operate power and hand tools to excavate gas lines and other underground utilities.
  • Perform labor related to the installation of gas distribution systems.
  • Inspect and repair existing gas infrastructure.
  • Install, locate, inspect, maintain, and repair pipelines, fittings, and valves.
  • Perform plumbing and pipefitting of gas lines.
  • Order supplies and equipment.
  • Clean and exercise valves.
  • Record utility locations in a GIS system.
  • Maintain records and logs of systems operation and maintenance activities.
  • Perform inspections of equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in restoration of failures or operating difficulties.
  • Perform routine maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory.
  • Respond to customer complaints and inquiries.
  • Maintain system documentation.
  • Inspect the work of lower levels and/or contractors.
  • Provide work direction to lower levels.
  • Train staff on work methods and procedures.
