About The Position

This role may be filled at the Apprentice or Journey level dependent upon qualifications. The Gas Combination Mechanic performs all Journeyman Gas Mechanic duties. This includes installing/removing, framing, and climbing poles, towers, and other structures. The role involves answering customer service calls, connecting and disconnecting electric meters, and training in both gas and electric duties. Employees will work energized conductors at 600 volts and below phase to phase, run temporary and permanent underground services, and operate trenchers or other earth-moving equipment. Work may also involve energized lines of 600 volts or more, and working within minimum approach distances under specific safety guidelines. Additional duties include running electric temporary and permanent overhead services, fusing single-phase transformers and lines, fusing three-phase banks and spurs/laterals, installing and repairing street and security lights, and performing electric switching operations. The position also includes installing and removing hot line taps under specific conditions. This classification does not require hot primary work and the employee will not be considered the "second person" for electric primary work. Requirements

  • Must complete competency based training program for installation of secondary underground cable of 600 volts or less or possess equivalent training.
  • Must complete two (2) years of Line Mechanic training or possess equivalent training.
  • Subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements under 49 CFR Part 40 and FMCSA (Part 382) and PHMSA (Part 199) regulations.
  • Obtain and maintain valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment, hand and power tools, and other machinery.
  • Knowledge of confined spaces, trenching and shoring standards.
  • Read and comprehend company operating standards, right to know information, safety rules, and equipment and technical manuals.
  • Must possess good reading and math comprehension skill.
  • Certified in CPR and first aid.
  • Good mechanical ability.
  • Work harmoniously with other employees.
  • Know and practice good public relations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all Journeyman Gas Mechanic duties.
  • Install/remove, frame and climb poles, towers and other structures.
  • Answer customer service calls.
  • Connect and disconnect (install and remove) self-contained electric meters up to 320 amps.
  • Work energized conductors at 600 volts and below phase to phase.
  • Run temporary and permanent underground services.
  • Operate trenchers or other earth moving equipment (with two qualified personnel at the job site).
  • Work on energized lines of 600 volts or more and may work within minimum approach distances when not exposed to contact with conductor equipment or apparatus energized at or above 600 volts as outlined in the IPL Safety Rule Book for Customer Service Mechanic’s.
  • Run electric temporary and permanent overhead services.
  • Fuse single phase transformers and lines.
  • Fuse three phase banks and three phase spurs/laterals (with only one three phase bank tapped on it).
  • Install and repair street lights and security lights.
  • Perform electric switching: Gang operated switches and use of switch stick to operate: disconnect blades, reclosers, and cutouts.
  • Install and remove hot line taps (with use of hot stick).
  • Limit hot tap operations to: Remove/install ahead of visibly opened disconnects and single phase transformers (with primary connected wye) only when lines are de energized or grounded.
  • Wear and use all safety equipment.
