About The Position

To perform a variety of functions in the maintenance and beautification of grounds and other landscaped areas; perform minor building maintenance functions; and to perform a variety of related tasks as assigned. Receives general supervision from the Lead Maintenance technician and the Maintenance and Operations Director.

Requirements

  • Two years’ experience involving landscape and supporting facilities and structures.
  • Equivalent to the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California’s Driver’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in various grounds maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of fertilizers and their proper usages/applications.
  • Knowledge of plant and tree diseases, pests common to the area and the methods used in their control.
  • Knowledge of herbicides and their proper usages/applications.
  • Knowledge of maintenance methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of operational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to use required tools in the performance of grounds and maintenance duties.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  • Ability to properly apply herbicides and pesticides.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted on the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.

  • Bilingual, oral and written (Spanish) preferred, not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site inspections; identify areas that need maintaining; prepare work orders for repairs; perform grounds maintenance and related work. Identify safety trip hazards.
  • Perform a variety of functions in the maintenance of grounds, including the planting of trees, shrubs, grass, flowers and other decorative plants and the watering, fertilizing, weeding and care of landscaped areas.
  • Mow and maintain lawns; detail and edge lawns; trim shrubs and trees; sweep and clean sidewalks.
  • Maintain athletic field; line fields, shovel, sand, gravel and cushioning materials into boxes.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair irrigation systems; set and adjust time clocks; repair and clean sprinkler heads; repair water and main lines.
  • Use and operate a variety of hand and power tools in performing assigned maintenance functions (such as power mower, riding mowers, chainsaws, chipper, string trimmer, backpack blower, and edger; pruning shears, shovels, channel locks, hand and electric pumps, hand and electric saws, trenchers, wire cutters) and other related equipment/tools.
  • Operate motor vehicles including light trucks and tractors plus towing trailers. Complete vehicle safety checklists as required.
  • Perform a variety of minor building maintenance functions; assist with plumbing and carpentry work; paint and clear graffiti. When appropriate, technical assistance and/or training will be provided.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed to perform assigned functions; requisition supplies and materials as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance of tools and equipment including preventive maintenance on power equipment.
  • Move furniture, supplies, and other equipment; assist in setting up for special events.
  • Perform routine minor vehicle maintenance in an emergency situation.
  • Perform general clean-up of job sites.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
