About The Position

This application is for a Gardener Civil Service Examination (CS2026-105). Submitting an application means you are applying to take an examination to be placed on an Eligible List for future openings. The examination is designed to test the objectives of the duties and minimum qualifications of the classification. The application period is from 08/14/2026 to 08/31/2026. To qualify for the examination, applicants must submit required documents supporting the Minimum Qualifications at the time of application.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in a Horticulture Field from an accredited college or university, OR the equivalent of two years of full-time paid experience in greenhouse, nursery, landscape maintenance, or other related field which includes the operation of landscape maintenance equipment especially vehicles and trailers, walk-behind and riding mowers, spreaders, and spray equipment.
• Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License.
• Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License in a horticulture related category (5, 6, or 8 or any of their sub-categories) for State of Ohio required within six months of date of hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs or supervises the production, planting, and maintenance of landscape and ornamental plants, interior plants, and greenhouse plants including tropical plants, flowers, shrubs, trees, and grass.
• Performs weeding, pruning, and trimming.
• Applies mulch, fertilizers, and pesticides.
• Cleans and maintains upkeep of park facilities, grounds, and equipment.
• Plows and clears snow.
• Supervises the work of seasonal employees.
• Interacts with the public.
• Completes reports.
