About The Position

The Walters Art Museum is seeking a Part Time Relief Gallery Officer to provide coverage for breaks and ensure adequate staffing throughout the day. This role is crucial for maintaining a safe and secure environment for visitors, staff, and the art collection. The Relief Officer will monitor museum activities, report hazards, maintain order, and enforce museum policies and procedures. The Walters Art Museum is a prominent institution in Baltimore, known for its diverse collection spanning seven millennia and its commitment to public education and community engagement. Requirements

High School diploma or GED.
Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience in the security field.
Demonstrated knowledge of security principles, practices, and procedures.
First Aid/AED/CPR certifications.
Security Guard Card certification.
Familiarity with monitoring and controlling alarm systems, CCTV, and 2-way radio communications and other communication systems.
Background in preparing incident reports.
Experience using computers and standard office programs or software.
Ability to document details in a clear and concise manner.
Able to multitask, properly assess and respond to emergencies, and take appropriate actions while performing under pressure.
Demonstrated strong customer service, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
Must be a team player and able to communicate effectively with visitors and staff at all levels, as well as with representatives from outside agencies.
Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
The museum does not sponsor work visas.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the art collection, building structure, floorplans, and museum policies and procedures.
Uphold the museum’s Visitor Promise by ensuring the museum is safe, welcoming, and accessible.
Patrol the museum, monitoring visitor and staff activity to ensure compliance with policies and a safe, secure environment.
Check for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, suspicious activity, and improper behavior.
Report all incidents to the security supervisor.
Respond to security and safety threats, fire, and other hazardous situations as directed.
Inspect the art at various times during the shift and report any unusual circumstances.
Prepare written reports of damage and unsafe conditions.
Inform supervisors and managers of all concerns, maintaining positive work relationships with Conservation, Registrars, and Collections Technicians.
Remain alert and attentive to the needs of visitors and staff, ensuring the museum is free from danger, risk, or hazardous situations.
Interact with visitors by providing information, facilitating special needs situations, and implementing museum procedures.
Answer telephone and radio transmissions; monitor activity in and around the museum to ensure safety.
Alert the security supervisor to areas needing special attention.
Place emergency calls as directed to fire, police, and other emergency agencies.
Serve as the communications hub for the museum.
Respond to the special needs of visitors and staff with hearing impairments, mental or physical challenges, or visual impairments.
Maintain working knowledge of policies and procedures regarding service animals, unattended children, armed visitors (law enforcement).
Ensure support equipment (elevators, lifts, etc.) are working properly.
Learn about the Walters art collection and understand the layout of the buildings, including specific gallery locations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
