About The Position

William Paterson University Galleries, founded in 1979, is a significant visual arts organization in Passaic County, offering valuable opportunities to view, interpret, study, and discuss the arts. The Galleries oversee a collection of approximately 3,500 objects, which serve as the basis for thematic exhibitions and educational resources for faculty, students, staff, visiting scholars, K-12 audiences, and the public. The Galleries feature three exhibition spaces totaling 5,000 square feet and present an average of 6 solo and thematic exhibits annually, along with numerous public programs, tours, and K-12 arts education workshops. These activities provide direct access to art and artists, offering insights into the artistic process. The University Galleries function as a cultural resource for the University, neighboring communities, and the region by presenting exhibitions, overseeing art collections, and offering educational programs. The Galleries aim to introduce diverse audiences to contemporary art and artists, enhancing appreciation and knowledge of the arts. Reflecting the University’s commitment to diversity, the Galleries strive to explore and respond to all aspects of diversity, fostering critical thinking, discussion, and discovery.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years related professional experience in a gallery or museum setting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • MA or MFA in Art, Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Education, or similar preferred.
  • General knowledge of contemporary art and art history.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Creative Suite applications, Constant Contact or similar, PastPerfect or similar, dotCMS or similar, Workday or similar.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience creating K-12 arts education curriculum and facilitating workshops is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the conception, design, and installation of annual exhibitions, liaising with artists, organizations, and vendors, and coordinates shipping arrangements.
  • Assists in the development and distribution of catalogs and other educational/informative exhibition materials.
  • Coordinates media relations and utilizes social media to promote gallery exhibitions and programs to students, faculty, and the general public.
  • Works with Gallery Director to plan and implement public programs and workshops for academic and external audiences.
  • Assists in the stewardship of the permanent collection of fine art and material culture.
  • Assists the Gallery Director in the completion of grant-supported activities.
  • Collects and helps compile data for grant reporting.
  • Conducts exhibition tours and arts education opportunities upon request.
  • Helps supervise work-study students and graduate assistants for gallery related duties.
  • Prepares documents, correspondence, and reports pertaining to gallery operations which includes use of the Workday platform.
  • Maintains files, images, and mailing lists relating to gallery exhibitions, programming, contacts, eblasts, etc.
  • Maintains content on the University Galleries website.
  • May represent the Gallery Director at meetings and events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.
