About The Position

The Economic Development and Culture (EDC) Division at the City of Toronto works to advance Toronto's prosperity, opportunity and liveability by fostering employment and investment opportunities, encouraging cultural vibrancy through enhanced cultural experiences, and engaging partners in planning and developing economic and cultural resources. EDC's Museum & Heritage Services section operates 10 historic sites - including Toronto's Fort York National Historic Site and Spadina Museum - that collectively tell the story of Toronto. The Gallery Clerk provides program and administrative support related to Market Gallery operations.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in art history, visual art, museum studies or a related discipline or an approved equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Considerable customer service experience in a public-facing arts, culture, gallery, museum, or similar environment.
  • Experience using database systems, maintaining accurate records, Microsoft Office and cataloguing information to support gallery, museum, tourism, cultural, retail, or other public-facing operations.
  • Knowledge of art, exhibition display techniques and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to interact with all levels of staff and the general public.
  • Ability to assist with exhibition preparation.
  • Ability to respond effectively to visitor, email and telephone enquiries and provide referrals to appropriate City departments and sites if necessary.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Interest in the visual arts and Toronto’s history.
  • Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Receives the public and provides interpretative services to gallery visitors, email and telephone enquiries regarding current exhibition, local history, special programmes, the City's fine art collection, gallery schedule.
  • Opens and closes the gallery.
  • Observes the public in the gallery areas and enforces gallery regulations; patrols gallery areas to protect against vandalism and theft, and reports to the Site Lead regarding problems such as lighting and labelling.
  • Handles the sales items such as postcards and catalogues and dispenses gallery literature.
  • Records and compiles daily and special attendance figures.
  • Performs financial transactions and monitors gallery accounts.
  • Prepares and collates material for bulk mailings.
  • Maintains general mailing list for subjects such as gallery literature and invitations.
  • Maintains office supplies.
  • Maintains permanent art collection records (including updating fine art database and filing)
  • Picks up supplies, mail and uses photocopy machine.
