About The Position

The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) is seeking an enthusiastic and learner-focused Functional English Classroom (FEC) Teacher to support newcomer, immigrant, and refugee adults in developing practical English skills for everyday life, employment, and community participation in Canada. This role is part of an innovative pilot program that empowers learners through engaging, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed instruction. The FEC Teacher will teach adults (18+) with approximately CLB Level 4 English proficiency, helping them strengthen their functional English skills through practical, real-world learning experiences in a welcoming classroom environment where learners feel safe to practice, make mistakes, ask questions, and grow.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or equivalent combination of education and experience
• TESL certification or equivalent English language teaching certification
• Experience facilitating adult learning
• Experience working with newcomer, immigrant, or refugee populations
• Experience applying trauma-informed practices
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching

Nice To Haves

• Alberta Teacher Certification
• Experience teaching English as an Additional Language (EAL)
• Experience in settlement or community-based programming
• Knowledge of Canadian workplace language expectations and settlement services
• Experience evaluating learner outcomes and program effectiveness

Responsibilities

• Plan and facilitate learner-centred English lessons.
• Teach conversational English, reading, writing, and workplace communication skills.
• Integrate practical life skills and workplace readiness into classroom activities.
• Encourage participation through group discussions, role plays, and collaborative learning.
• Assess learner progress and identify individual goals.
• Adapt lessons to accommodate diverse learning styles and educational backgrounds.
• Maintain learner records and provide progress updates as required.
• Foster a welcoming, respectful, and culturally responsive classroom.
• Apply trauma-informed practices that promote safety, trust, and belonging.
• Build positive relationships that support learner engagement and confidence.
• Gather learner feedback and evaluate program effectiveness.
• Participate in curriculum enhancement and pilot project evaluation activities.
• Collaborate with colleagues to continuously improve the learner experience.
• Partner with Program Managers, Team Leads, and other CBFY staff.
• Attend team meetings and professional development opportunities.
• Support organizational initiatives that enhance program quality and learner outcomes.
