About The Position

We are seeking a full-stack web developer to help operate and develop the General Coordinates Network (GCN) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. GCN is NASA's open-source alert system for time-domain and multimessenger astrophysics, distributing automated alerts and observation reports to astronomers worldwide. This role involves working closely with developers and scientists on the web application, the Kafka service, and user support. Development is done in the open at github.com/nasa-gcn.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a physical science (or equivalent degree/diploma)
3+ years of professional web development experience
Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript, React, Python, AWS, and Git/GitHub
US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required
US residency for the past 3 consecutive years
Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA

Nice To Haves

5+ years of professional web development experience
Experience with AWS services including CloudFormation, Lambda, DynamoDB, OpenSearch, EC2, Elastic Container Service
Familiarity with Apache Kafka
Experience with the Remix web framework
Experience with infrastructure-as-code for serverless applications (e.g., Architect / arc.codes)
Knowledge of accessible web design standards (Section 508, U.S. Web Design System)
Knowledge of astronomy and experience working with scientific data

Responsibilities

Build and maintain features across the full-stack GCN web application
Extend the serverless backend on AWS
Write and expand automated tests
Develop the Notices Kafka broker, the Circulars database and search index, and the client libraries astronomers use to consume the alert stream
Collaborate with NASA scientists and engineers on new features that advance astronomy and astrophysics around the world
