About The Position

Help us build the future of real-time retail execution. We're the Execution Intelligence platform for CPG brands, and we're looking for a Full Stack Engineer who takes ownership of their work, from picking up a ticket to seeing the change running in production. You'll build on the systems we already have, backend through to front end, and own your work through to deployment. This is a mid-level role with real breadth. Your depth is in the backend, and you want to grow across front end and deployment rather than specialise. AI fluency is what makes that breadth workable. Our Head of Engineering owns the architecture and system design, so you have a system to learn from and someone to learn it with. Customers experience our product as a whole. They don't see the boundaries between backend systems, APIs and interfaces. They see whether something works, whether it solves their problem and whether they can rely on it. That reliability is what wins new customers and what keeps the ones we have. With our strong backend depth existing in the team, what we need alongside it is someone who works across the stack, connecting the underlying technology to what customers actually interact with, and takes it through to production. Your mission: get working software into customers' hands and keep it reliable, so what we promise and what we deliver are the same thing.

Requirements

  • Around four years' equivalent experience building and shipping software as part of an engineering team.
  • Experience in a start-up or small engineering team of fewer than ten people, where you have worked close to the whole product rather than one narrow area.
  • Owned at least one project front to back across the full stack, from first commit to running in production. Two or more is a strong signal.
  • Recent experience using AI tools to drive a project end to end.
  • Python backend development, including async paradigm.
  • REST API design - FastAPI, or a comparable Python framework.
  • PostgreSQL and relational database design - SQLAlchemy, or equivalent ORM experience.
  • Understanding of web system design principles and how components fit together.
  • React and TypeScript, enough to connect front end to backend and carry a feature through. Front-end specialist depth is not expected.
  • AI fluency. We have no preference on which tools, and we will ask you which you use and how.
  • You take initiative on cross-team threads.
  • You follow the wider technical discussions and get involved rather than waiting to be assigned.
  • You handle ambiguity by unblocking first.
  • Faced with a live issue, you get a hotfix in to stop the immediate problem, then bring the team together to plan the proper fix and drive it through.
  • You ask for help rather than handing work back.
  • When you get stuck you come in for advice, work it through, then carry it forward yourself.
  • You communicate directly. You say what you have found, what you need and where you are.
  • You want to spend time with the team in person - with quarterly travel to our London Office and travel at least once a week to Edinburgh.

Nice To Haves

  • Designed a web system yourself, rather than only worked within one someone else designed.
  • Distributed systems, and message queueing such as RabbitMQ.
  • GraphQL for the frontend to backend connection (Strawberry used on the backend side, Apollo on the frontend).
  • Trained on the job Terraform, infrastructure as code and the GCP stack.
  • Some baseline understanding of deployment helps, and we will train the depth in your first three months.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain features across the stack, backend through to front end.
  • Implement against the existing architecture and system design, test your work and see it running.
  • Own the whole feature, from the data layer through to what the user interacts with.
  • Build and maintain the connections between our platform, our internal services and customer systems.
  • Investigate, trace across services, fix and deploy fixes for data flow or integration failures.
  • Work directly with our delivery and machine learning teams to turn what they need into a working connection.
  • Own the CI/CD pipeline your work runs through, keeping the route from commit to production reliable, and deploy your own changes.
  • Own how AI is used to improve your delivery, building automation into your own workflow and extending it to the engineering work around you.
  • Undertake additional tasks as requested by the Head of Engineering.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary, paying up to £100,000 per annum.
  • Equity share options - EMI share option scheme.
  • Options vest over 48 months with a 12-month cliff.
  • Pension - 3% contribution through Penfold via salary sacrifice, with 5% employee contributions.
  • Perks at Work - access to thousands of discounts across 30,000+ brands via CharlieHR.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Holiday Purchase scheme - buy up to 5 additional days of annual leave per year.
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to carry forward up to 3 days.
  • Company socials.
  • AXA private medical insurance - full premium covered.
  • Cover includes cancer treatment, diagnostics, physiotherapy, counselling, and European travel insurance.
  • Dental and optical handbooks also available.
