About The Position

This position will hold responsibilities in multiple functions within the Fuels & Energy Supply organization, intended to build a comprehensive understanding of OPC's fuel portfolio, market dynamics, operational and billing requirements, preparing the individual for advanced roles within the organization. Responsibilities include supporting the evaluation, implementation, and management of long-term gas supply, transportation, and storage agreements, as well as fuel oil strategies and related contract administration. These activities are aimed at optimizing OPC's portfolio of gas generation, transportation, and fuel oil assets. The position works cross-functionally with teams including Risk Management, Member Billing, Planning and Financial Analysis, and ACES Power to support the implementation and tracking of projects and transactions. Responsibilities also include reviewing complex monthly Member billing for accuracy and partnering with Operational Interfaces, Member Billing, and Mid and Back Office groups to ensure transactions are accurately captured and coded. In addition, the role supports physical gas trading activities for OPC's generation fleet, including participation in on-call rotations, and provides backup support to power trading to help optimize energy sales from OPC's portfolio of assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM or business field is required.
  • 2-5 years of relevant energy industry experience in natural gas or utility operations, preferably with understanding of natural gas supply and pipeline assets that serve the east region of the U.S.
  • Knowledge of electric power generation preferred.
  • 2 years working in an electric co-op utility environment with strong and demonstrated knowledge of natural gas fired CC and CT operations, natural gas supply/demand and pipeline dynamics affecting the Southeast, Southeast Power Markets and proven ability to work effectively across various departments.
  • Highly organized, effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and Power Point) and knowledge and experience with MS Sharepoint.
  • Working knowledge of cloud data concepts, experience with automation tools, familiarity with analytics concepts.

  • Familiarity with the co-op structure and knowledge of natural gas and power market economics preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluation, analysis, recommendations for gas projects, including: gas supply, gas transportation, gas hedging and fuel oil optimization strategies for OPC's gas generating assets.
  • Assistance with the development and implementation of risk policies and gas strategies through: RFP development for gas transportation solicitation, deal or opportunity evaluations, counterparty negotiations for various optimization opportunities, including: pipeline agreements (release and expansion), gas supply agreements (Asset Management Agreements, NAESB's & ISDAs), and agent agreement negotiations.
  • Conduct annual reviews of OPC's Risk Management Policies and Procedures for suggested modifications or additions.
  • Monitor energy news, industry publications, utility IRPs, pipeline constraints, etc. to determine possible impacts to OPC and assist with strategy recommendations.
  • Responsibility for complex monthly validations of various reports from Billing and ACES, investigations and explanations of differences.
  • Develop solutions for anomolies and other one-off events.
  • Creation of OPC's Firm Transportation and Gas Prices budget with input from the Manager, Coal and Gas Strategy as well as creating forward-looking reports on gas prices for each of OPC's generators on an as-needed basis.
  • Will be responsible for creating integrated processes among internal functions such as operations, billing, accounting, environmental, planning and 3rd party middle and back office to support front office fuel-related activities and transactions.
  • Trading/Scheduling Functions- Buy/Sell and schedule physical gas on a short and intermediate term basis to support 3 Combined Cycle Gas-fired Generating Facilities and 10 Combustion Turbine facilities on 4 pipes to achieve the lowest possible economics and optimize idle transportation capacity within the guidelines of OPC's Risk Policies.
  • Will buy/sell fuel oil as back-up for primary fuel oil trader on an as-needed basis.
  • Will also trade power as back-up to Senior Director, Energy Marketing.
  • Process Automation & Controls – Design and implement automated workflows across recurring activities (monthly validations, variance investigations, standardized reporting, and data compilation); build exception checks and control routines to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy
  • AI / Advanced Analytics Enablement – Build, maintains and enhance AI-enabled analytical tools to enhance gas price forecasting, basis/transport constraint analysis, and portfolio optimization insights;
