About The Position

Chevron is accepting online applications for the position Fuels Chemistry Technologist. The Fuels Chemistry Technologist provides technical support to the Fuels Technology (FT) organization and reports to the Fuels Chemistry Technical Team Lead. Day-to-day work direction will come from one or more project leads. This role applies chemistry knowledge and laboratory, computer, and project skills to support fuel additives and gasoline, aviation, and diesel fuel products. Work includes characterizing competitor performance to validate Chevron with Techron® claims, optimizing current formulations, and identifying opportunities for future improvements. The position is based at Chevron’s Richmond Technology Center in Richmond, California. Operational Excellence and Safety are paramount in FT. The successful candidate is expected to embrace the Operational Excellence Management System and comply with all applicable policies and requirements. Responsibilities include hands-on chemical laboratory project work involving sampling (and/or blending and synthesizing), testing, and analyzing fuel and fuel additive samples. The role requires reliably balancing multiple high-priority projects while working effectively with others. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated general chemistry laboratory skills and the ability to work safely and reliably in a laboratory environment with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand college-level chemistry concepts, perform moderately complex calculations, and effectively organize, analyze, and summarize laboratory data.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct a high volume of varied bench-scale procedures and quickly and safely master equipment and instrumentation given detailed instructions but limited direct supervision.
  • Proficiency with common software for data handling, searching, analysis, plotting, and reporting (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Word, PowerPoint, and electronic databases).
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; ability to prioritize, complete, and document multiple overlapping projects.
  • Demonstrated collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with technicians, technologists, and scientists; willingness to support other areas of the team in response to changing business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in analytical, physical, or organic chemistry and demonstrated strength in instrument-based analysis.
  • Quantitative Analysis (or equivalent) coursework; demonstrated ability to prepare laboratory standards accurately and follow good laboratory practices.
  • Familiarity with liquid hydrocarbon fuels and fuel additives.
  • Experience formulating and blending additive packages and fuels to meet specified target compositions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned work in compliance with company safety regulations, policies, and procedures; rigorously maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Handle fuels, fuel components, additives, and additive components safely and reliably.
  • Maintain lab supplies, manage chemical inventory, and keep complete, accurate laboratory records (e.g., laboratory notebook and electronic files).
  • Support retail and aftermarket formulation development, including blending for testing/analysis and blending for engine testing; assist with troubleshooting for plant support and in the field.
  • Prepare fuel additive formulations using complex calculations and subsequent blending of individual components for testing and analysis, and for blending into fuels for engine programs.
  • Organize and prepare samples for test programs, which may involve: Assessing and characterizing liquid and/or solid fuel or fuel-system contaminants.
  • Submitting samples for testing in partner labs and organizing the results.
  • Performing routine and specialized analyses on fuels and fuel additives (chemical, physical, and performance) using laboratory techniques, instruments, equipment, and/or test rigs.
  • Conduct competitive assessment activities to validate and support Chevron with Techron® claims.
  • Use and perform routine maintenance of tools, equipment, and instruments used in assigned tasks.
  • Prioritize and use complex analytical instrumentation to identify root causes of product-quality issues for Chevron retail and aftermarket additives (plant and field support).
  • Develop and maintain working knowledge in troubleshooting, maintenance, and method development for multiple analytical techniques (e.g., liquid chromatography, NMR, FTIR, and other relevant methods).
  • Perform graphical and numerical data analysis using Microsoft Excel and other tools; organize technical data files and provide timely updates and reports to project leads.
